gonna be honest. I'm drunk. I can see double-images of what I'm typing. It's kinda hilarious. I'm using my left-eye to focus on what I'm typing, because that's my strong eye. I'm also left-handed and left-hooded. I might *actually* have my brain reversed in it's function. How appropriate :)

Yesterday I learned that:
-My boss thinks I'm not working as hard as I shouyld be. the other research tech, hired at the same time, is doing better than me. My boss doesn't recognize that the other research tech is INFJ while I'm INTP. My boss said: "I expect to motivate my volunteers and high school students in science. In undergrad volunteers I help a bit and also expect a bit from them. Im people that I pay- post-grads, grad students and research techs, I expect you to work hard without motivation"

I've taken business classes. My boss is INTJ or INTP. WHAT THE FUCK. How is it not in her best interests to throw a few minutes my way in the form of motivation to make my job better?

Well on thursdaym 1/21/2010, my boss said i was doing shitty and said that i should seriously consider doing a 10-week program with her lab, instead of being a permanent research tech. It's like.... wtf. I feel like I haven't had a proper guidance and I also haven't had enough time to adjust to the lab.

An anecdote: on december 31st, 2009, I offered to come in on january 1st, 2010. New Year's Eve. My boss aid "no, that's not neccessary". The other research tech, which was hired on the same day as I was, came in on new year's days and also worked other days of the week.

My boss used that against me in my job-review. It's like.... WTF.

In the begining of the interview and employment my boss told me the importance of honesty. And yet, she's not giving me honest opinions about what she expects of me. It's pissed me off.

My boss recognizes that:

  • I have intelligence
  • I have worked extra (more than 8hr/workday)
  • I have interest in science
but she feels that I might not have passion in *this* lab. totally unfucking fair, she's not being FAIR with her *real* expectations.

that being said, I'm being kicked in the butt like a typical INTP and I am working overdrive and accomplishing shit and realizing what my TRUE objectives are. Which are: results, results, results.

Also my gf & I may be breaking up.

Happy Birthday to me.

Unfortunately, an INTP's work ethic (contrary to popular belief, INTP's are capable of hard work) is often overlooked because we don't advertise it as loudly as other types. Also, our "passion" is much more internalized than an extroverts or F types, so we radiate aloofness.

Loved the picture.

Your boss sucks. I've had more than one boss who sucked that bad, and if you are anything like me, someday you will have a different boss that you actually like and respect, and you will look back on this job, and you will STILL hate your current boss. You been wronged. I recommend starting to look for a new job, while trying not to get fired in the current one. It will happen, even if it takes a year to find something good.

In the meantime, though you work in a lab rather than writing code, you might enjoy this song by Jonathan Coulton, "Code Monkey."

Happy Birthday, anyway, and next year will be better.

Maybe you should tell her these things (without the MBTI jargon perhaps) and see how she responds. It doesn't seem like you understand what she wants of you. The exciting part of your situation, however, is that no matter what the outcome is, it will lead to new experiences, and you will be that much wiser from getting out of this one alive.

But what it really boils down to is them being jealous of your clarinet.

I'm very sorry to hear all this RT. It really sucks when things in life aren't going well. But remember life goes on and you're not alone in this shitty fucked up world.

Btw, your boss sounds like a bitch.

Agreed.

RT: You're the man, remember that. Just come to work with a renewed attitude everyday, nothing can bring you down outside of yourself. You're your own biggest enemy, not your boss or this company. Take this all as an opportunity to grow. Now feel those growing pains! Yeah!

What amazes me is that so many people are put into managerial positions without the slightest clue as to how to be a 'good boss" I have had a good supervisor so rarely, that i decided that such was worth at least a 10% salary cut, because a boss who incompetent as such can make even a good job an unpleasant experience.

However, it sounds like you're the victim of favoritism and that she preferred the company of the other tech from the very beginning... Interpersonal politics in play perhaps?

I hear you on that load of shit. You're walking along, everything seems fine then all of a sudden you look down, the floors not there. Sadly it the truth. One thing I've learned is that you have to play office politics if you want to go places.

I've been in this situation many times. It's too bad that it takes until something like this til you become aware of it. If this is a job you care about then I know you will turn around and show her whats what sort of thing. Look at it as a chance to prove her wrong, that usually gets me going.

Sucks about your girlfriend too.

Life's short drink up buddy.

Sorry to hear that's how it's going, RT. You deserve better than that. 'Specially around your birthday. I hope it gets better for you - that your life has some awesome stuff come up before another January comes around.

Happy Birthday, Reverse Transcriptase!
