Yeah so im getting a tattoo and I really really REALLY need ideas and I am not good at coming up with them. And I figure that you INTPs should have the best ideas.

I know that I dont want anything white trash.
No Dragons, Chinese Characters, tribal tattoos or anything like that.

I just need a very interesting or thought provoking tattoo. Any Ideas?

An idea would be to wait getting a tattoo until you yourself figure out what you want.
What you don't want is what someone else thought up.

I agree with Jules. Once you have the tattoo, you're pretty much stuck with it, so I'd wait until I knew what I wanted for myself, if I were you. Besides, the word 'interesting' is subjective: I don't know what you would consider captivating and what I consider to be the pinnacle of fascination might be the most boring thing in the world for you.

Well I still want other ideas that I can work with. I dont really care if its my idea or not, just as long as I like it.

And to Ghost..... I was thinking about getting some kind of skull or skeleton for a long time. Maybe a day of the dead style skeleton, that would be cool.

Well, you could tattoo a "do not enter sign on your butt" but that is usually only needed if you are a straight man going to prison.

I saw a really cool tattoo today. someone with a bald head and had tattooed an eye on the back of his head. I suppose if you wanted to be extreme you could have that tattooed to your forehead.

Of course if you really wanted to freak people out you could tattoo two life size breasts to your chest.

How about a riddle or a puzzle that is really difficult to figure out? or an optical illusion? Or a heart with several symbols from several ideologically different religions inside, like WICCAN/ Christian/Muslim/Hindu? That ought to confuse people.

Back to the bald head thing, how about tatooing a steaming pile of shit on the back of your head?

How about a halloween theme like a few bullet holes, stiched up scars, a tumor, a parasite, or a knife sticking out of your back?

How about a bar code? Or a rolex watch to your wrist (much cheeper then an actual rolex, and it will be correct 2x a day unless you are on 24 hour time)? Or a colostomy bag to your abdomen? Socks to your ankle? A tie to your chest? A garter to your thigh?

Oh the possibilities!!

Perhaps something from your culture? I am definitely having a black panther on my neck when I grown older just to taunt the austrians. harhar.

After I posted I thought of more possibilities, here they are.

A "kick me" sigh to your back.

A bra.

Toe tags to your feet (this will make it easier for the coroner if you go shirtless into a redneck bar with a pair of breasts tattooed to your chest).

If you have a lot of money how about an unpainted paint by numbers picture on your back?

Or a price tag on your head? Better yet how about a price list for services rendered on your back?

Man, how do I keep coming up with this stuff!!

Haha well I am a mix of Irish and Polish. So I guess I could get a potato or a polish sausage tattooed to my chest. But I dont think that would go over very well with the family.

Personally, I wouldn't ever get a permanent tatoo since I change my mind too often. Even when I draw really cool stuff on my hand, I get bored with it in a few hours.

Ooh, ooh! I have more ideas!

How about a bottle of laxatives, or some embarrassing feminine hygiene produce?

A target?

A black hole?

Bowl of fruit?

A furry mole?

A heart with the names of several girlfriends and/or boyfriends?

A hole in your head where, inside the hole, are clouds in a blue sky?

Really? I'm kind of partial to the price list on the back for services rendered (not for me though).

Well, the fun thing about a barcode is that you can encode something into it - a friend of mine is planning to get a barcode of her name on her foot.

I personally am hoping to eventually get something Da Vinci/steampunk themed - either a flying machine, or a tree that branches into a wooden clockwork wing.

How about a Salvidor Dali thing, like a melting watch on your wrist. Or a notice some place on your body that says this body will self destruct (give a date). Or a disclaimer statement? Or love No10diots?

Yeah! I was thinking about doing something surreal or Dali-ish. So I think I am going to jack an art textbook from my school and look for ideas in that.

The Polish eagle would be cool, yeah... Maybe, if you're Irish, with a Celtic/La Téne design worked around it? A lot of Celtic (Iron Age) patterns/designs are really cool. Alhtough, perhaps, a bit overdone.

And to Ghost..... I was thinking about getting some kind of skull or skeleton for a long time. Maybe a day of the dead style skeleton, that would be cool.

Hmmm... What about a skeleton Polish eagle, surrounded by twisting, vaguely Celtic green flames?

...Actually, I may steal that, but use the American eagle instead. ;)

I'm fine without any tattoos. Is it truly necessary to decorate your body for aesthetic reasons? I would never take pleasure in having an image on my body or showing it to individuals. Plus, if you decide to have an tattoo, it is there for your entire life. People change their minds. The procedure to have one removed is very expensive.

I wouldn't mind a decent tattoo once it was on. Actually getting it, though... that's the part that scares me. Not to mention that I have no idea where the hell I'd put it on me. If I did pick a design, though, I'd draw it on myself in ball point pen/Sharpie, keep it there for a month by re-drawing it, and see if I still liked it at the end of that. And if I do, I see no problem in making it permanent. I mean, with my attention span, if something can survive a month, it'll last long enough to make me not regret it too much. Especially if it's an abstract image or a representation of one of my core values.

Might as well. Everyone dies so nothing is permanent.

We might as well disfigure our faces and run around Times Square naked. But, seriously, our time is limited and we should choose options wisely while we're alive. It is not acceptable to commit many mistakes.

It's not something to rush into, no, but as long as you don't just decide to get one and then rush out and have it done that minute, I don't see a problem with getting a tattoo. Like I said, I'd consider any choice of tattoo I got very carefully, and I would encourage anyone else to do the same, but in the end, it's a form of personal expression, as much as the way we talk or the clothes we wear. Stressing personal.

I'm still trying to think of decent ideas...

They do have microencapsulated inks - inks that can be broken down by the body sealed inside capsules that can be broken down in a couple of laser sessions, dramatically reducing the cost of tattoo removal. http://news.brown.edu/pressreleases/2007/07/microcapsule

Actually, found it - it looks like they're just starting to sell it commercially, and the brand name is apparently "InfitiInk". http://www.infinitink.com/intro/intro.html

How about an Illuminati pyramid, like my avatar. The illuminati is cool, can represent so much and will always be meaningfull (love them or hate them)
A dollar symbol would be pretty pimp as well, and can represent capitilism and lots of other shit.
Consider getting something written in old english, old english makes anything evil and cool.

Ben, I'm coming from a bit of an unconventional view regarding tattoos, as my philosophy is that my (I stress my as everyone's views are different) body is something that I wouldn't want to use as a canvas for artwork. I say that not to be argumentative at all, but so you know where I'm coming from.

So given that I am coming from that place, I would suggest something that is not mere decoration, but something that means a lot to you and is something that is an integral part of you, either in who you are or in who you aspire to be.

For me, it would be a symbol of love, because that's what matters most to me.

Ick! Like, get away from me -- you who speaks of sharing and feeling. I'm ashamed of sharing anything with you...*oh no, oh god no...we share feeling ashamed of sharing too*

Now look what you've done. You've gotten me sharing and feeling too. Evil feeler, you did that on purpose.

Guys? That's what PMs are for. This is a thread.

What about an image that's been abstracted and taken down to just a few lines to represent it? Especially if the lines are expressive in and of themselves, that would look cool and communicate something about the over-complication of everything in modern life.

Ben, what are you interested in? What do you do for fun? What are the most valued things/concepts in your life? If we knew a little more about you we'd probably be able to come up with ideas you like more. ;)

Ok, I like music and I would say that I am somewhat artistic. I also like surrealism and some would say I am kind of a misanthrope. Is that good?

You guys should also send me pictures found on the internet if you feel like it.

I'd get a gryphon twisting forming a circle. It'd be up high enough so that it'd even be hidden by shorts though. Pretty much just something for me.

S'ok Chocky. I kind of wondered if I wasn't being a jerk myself. :o

What about eyes? Very lifelike eyes somewhere or other on your body, say, on your shoulder or something? I like green, personally...but an odd colour like purple or electric blue would be cool too...maybe a melting eye, or an eye made of metal. What about an image composed of musical notes and symbols? A familiar image in an unfamiliar setting or in unfamiliar colours?
