Can someone please explain why this sites icon is a Maltese Cross? I mean, is it significant, or just random? Anyway, bored with all the same old bickering elsewhere, so someone throw a bone.

It's the Iron Cross and I treat it as a comical nod to the sheer amount of are grammar Nazis on hear.

I just created an account and I immediately had the same question, does nobody know the actual answer?

Dang, wish I saw that comment earlier, would have responded to it sooner. Then, it would have been intrinsically different.

It is a Maltese cross even if he likes Germans... My point is that it couldn't be assumed by the symbols used.

It isn't a Maltese Cross, it's an Iron Cross.

This is a Maltese Cross:

Re: Nothing in particular

Iron cross is a military award, not a cross type. It happens to use a Maltese cross, which btw, in German military awards begun with the pour le merite. The iron cross was later developed as a lessor version of this original award. Can you identify this symbol?

Re: Nothing in particular

Hm, there seems to be a few more or less reliable sources out there.

This site explains the history of the Maltese Cross as used by the Order of St. John.

Ok.

This site explains how the Iron Cross was designed based on the Maltese Cross version Cross Pattée (see designs previous site).

Right.

Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Cross

More confusion.: "The basic design of the medal has remained constant, that of a Maltese Cross of cast iron edged with silver."

:storks:

So it seems both Hawkeye and Spock are sort of right.

It looks like an Iron Cross, but it's also a Maltese Cross.....

Perhaps best to ask the owner of this site. Sadly, he's mostly absent.

The Iron Cross uses the Cross Pattée design which is often mistakenly called the Maltese Cross. They are not the same thing.

What you're saying is equivalent to saying a Ferrari is the same as a Mini Cooper. They are the same if the category is super generic, e.g., they are both cars.

Maltese cross
noun
1.
a cross with arms of equal length which broaden from the centre and have their ends indented in a shallow V-shape.

Therefore, the image you provided is a Maltese Cross which further supports my point. Try and find me an Iron Cross that uses the Maltese Cross design as it is defined. ^^

Good luck! :D

Re: Nothing in particular

see Polaris' post. My work is done for me.

You do realise that the definition of the Maltese Cross I posted is featured in one of Polaris' links; as is the comment about how the Iron Cross is often mistakenly called a Maltese Cross.

Did you even read the links? ^^

Also, "design adopted from the Maltese Cross" does not mean it is a Maltese Cross.

this bit seems to cover it all:
So it seems both Hawkeye and Spock are sort of right.

How? By definition it isn't a Maltese Cross.

The actual answer is it's a Cross Pattée with the design in the top left corner of this forum often being associated with the Iron Cross.

Derived from = of

Doing as most do here, I surface scanned wiki and found it is, in at least one reference derived from the Maltese cross. We can call it an iron cross if you wish. Is it first or second class and from which issue?

Derived = formed or developed from something else; not original

Eating a pancake is not equivalent to consuming all the ingredients individually.

To humour you, I'll answer your question. If it were the Iron Cross, it would be the 1813 issue: first class. ;)

Reason: It's the only Iron Cross to feature no emblems or date on the face. Also, as it has no loop at the top, it can only mean first class. ^^

No it is the same as eating them all together. However, victory is yours. Cross pattee is derived from but not equal to Maltese cross.

Re: Forum symbol meaning

It might've been intended as maltese or iron cross.

I would lean towards the iron cross given the founders background and the straight edges.

Merged to include all that's already been said about it.

Look for Polaris' post for some detail.

Found it!
by chance or boredom...
Main thread here.

Creator's comment on crosses:
Variously different modifications are being added at random --- and ruthlessly discarded at will. An announcement as to changes added will be made when the current bout of additions is exhausted. :cat:

The favicon of the Cross Pattee, or the Maltese Cross
favicon.ico
, reminiscent as Anthile implies of the Ordo Domus Sanctæ Mariæ Theutonicorum Hierosolymitanorum, is selected for three reasons.

1/ It is not the vBulletin standard. And I am fond of German things, both good and bad --- but most particularly Kaiserreich things: I am not actually German, but as I explained to someone recently: Lord Haldane laboured well to build England's preWWI defensive capabilities and then was kicked out for being pro-German solely since he had made the statement: "My spiritual home is Germany." ( The English are a very hysterical nation when excited ); I can say the same thing.

Actually, at the start another favicon was implemented, and had that stuck people would be wistful for that as the old familiar:
animated_favicon1.gif
But someone elected to delete that and we reverted to the ordinary vBulletin seen everywhere.

2/ Also this one is only 1kb compared to the vBulletin 10kb, that's a tremendous saving for every page pulled.

3/ On another board my signature evolved to include one of these little crosses for every perma-ban I made. I think it was 37 at the end: as one famous German writer, Stefan Zweig, almost put it:

Beware of Pity.

Although Nietzsche spent his life expounding on this duty rather more forcefully... :phear:

So uh... How'd the thing disappear/appear to begin with? I don't think Ragnar has logged in recently (I may not actually be able to see if he did though), and it seemed to coincide with LoR's silent demotion to mere moderator.

You are perceptive for an old man...

The small cross is still visible in the header of the tab, to the left of the page name.

The big one was removed since it mistakenly appeared after the advertisements have been removed.

We are now officially non-profit, again.
