It's eudemonia's birthday on Monday and I thought it would be nice to honour the incredible contribution she makes to this forum by creating a thread in which we can, if we wish, give her our birthday gifts. I don't know if she's visiting regularly, I suspect not, but on Monday I will email her and let her know there is a 'box' of gifts for her.

So Happy Birthday eudemonia!

It is all connected,
deep beyond deep
where self and other

where the temptation
to be real dissolves
into no necessity
for the solid world
of ego and we become,
becoming, without

It is all connected

What is this? A party for Nia? Hmmmm .............. that reminds me of a "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" quote about parties, and physicist's and smart asses, for some reason.

The principle of generating small amounts of finite improbability by simply hooking the logic circuits of a Bambleweeny 57 Sub- Meson Brain to an atomic vector plotter suspended in a strong Brownian Motion producer (say a nice hot cup of tea) were of course well understood - and such generators were often used to break the ice at parties by making all the molecules in the hostess's undergarments leap simultaneously one foot to the left, in accordance with the Theory of Indeterminacy.

Many respectable physicists said that they weren't going to stand for this - partly because it was a debasement of science, but mostly because they didn't get invited to those sort of parties.

Another thing they couldn't stand was the perpetual failure they encountered in trying to construct a machine which could generate the infinite improbability field needed to flip a spaceship across the mind-paralysing distances between the furthest stars, and in the end they grumpily announced that such a machine was virtually impossible.

Then, one day, a student who had been left to sweep up the lab after a particularly unsuccessful party found himself reasoning this way:
If, he thought to himself, such a machine is a virtual impossibility, then it must logically be a finite improbability. So all I have to do in order to make one is to work out exactly how improbable it is, feed that figure into the finite improbability generator, give it a fresh cup of really hot tea ... and turn it on!

He did this, and was rather startled to discover that he had managed to create the long sought after golden Infinite Improbability generator out of thin air.

It startled him even more when just after he was awarded the Galactic Institute's Prize for Extreme Cleverness he got lynched by a rampaging mob of respectable physicists who had finally realized that the one thing they really couldn't stand was a smartass.
Anyway, I invited a guest, is that okay?

Happy birthday Eudemonia!

Now presents...
I'd write poetry, but I'm no poet.
I'd link to something, but all I found was "Salad Fingers" (you don't want to know).
I'd write a story, but I don't have enough time.

So instead *thinking really fast* I present you my word.
Basically this works like a single genie's wish, limited of course to my capabilities.
It's in my sig.

Ummm...I don't know what to get you Nia...

I'd draw something, but I can't install my scanner on this machine (no disk drive), so you wouldn't see it.
I'd write something, but this close to NaNo, my brain's already in mindless drivel mode, and I don't want to give you mindless drivel. You're too awesome for mindless drivel. Even with a cybernetic gryphon in it.

I'll just look really cute, in an effort to let you know how amazing you are.

Happy birthday, Nia. I hope you find some time to relax for it...

Indeed, I think we might even be able to keep you possessions safe from theft whilst you enjoy yourself... Group effort!

Well I rarely lurk nowadays as I have so little time, but I wondered on here tonight and look what I find!

I really don't deserve all your good wishes as I so rarely frequent the forum and contribute to your discussions - though I was tempted to join the sick of god threads thread:p I tend to lurk when I 'm making my kids supper and that's about it. I do take an interest in you all though so I really appreciate your birthday wishes. And I'm glad I found it tonight as I wouldn't have had the time tomorrow to indulge in all your gifts!

So thank you Snowqueen for your brilliant and moving poem. Who wrote it - it was amazingly beautiful and apt. And your pictures Sapphire were stunning - did you take them and were they close to where you live? As soon as I saw them I was transported to another time and place. And thank you for your cute pic Sagewolf, your comfy socks Tom, your amazing green emoticons RT your recognition of my name Felan, the scrummy cake Ashenstar and the mega cake with far too many candles IB - and remember you're not that far behind me :p Decaf, when you're my age you'll listen to that with a grimace of painful recognition - yes, you really do start to think about death much more. So enjoy your youth! Noddy, thank you for that profound and sensitive acknowledgement of my faith - if you were in the UK I could sue you for incitement of religious hatred, so if you fancy coming over some time..... Da blob, what can I say? That's between you and me. Cog, so, I have a wish - now I understand the sig. I would like to have the skin of a 20 year old - can you sort that for me or is it only artificial limbs and body parts you can do?

Honestly, I feel really lucky to be accepted as part of this community of weird, idiosyncratic, frustrating, funny, obsessive, opinionated, wrong-headed, intelligent, sensitive, irreverant, wise, honest and maddingly addictive group of people. I have tried to leave the forum about three times but I keep coming back. WHY?

Because of you guys.

You are amazing.

Thanks for being you.

You're here!
I wanted to draw something, and I have the markers with me, but I can't think of anything. However, I'll have something ready tomorrow. It's still your b-day, right?

Congrats!
*hugs*

Your birthday is definitely a special day--how could we not celebrate the day such a fun, gentle, intelligent soul was born? Even though I wish you had more time to post, you'll hardly be forgotten--ever--by your friends here. So don't worry; you're still in the heart of the forum.
Sadly, my words and affection are all I have to give for a gift...I humbly offer them, Nia, and hope you have a fantastic birthday! :D

hm... so I'm not really sure what you'd like, and wanted to give something more than a "happy birthday".... so here goes. I've no idea your music taste or anything, but I thoroughly love this song, and this comedy sketch. The song is probably my all time favorite, and the comedy sketch is so corny that you'll haveta at least crack a smile. Hopefully you'll find em good and funny, though... enjoy! :)

Not my own, I'm afraid. :o Merely chosen for effect. I'm glad you enjoyed them!

And yet... don't forget: Life is wasted on the living. You know that there are cantankerous dead folk in cemeteries everywhere muttering this nearly every day.

I was trying to wrap up Noddy's soul with a cute little double bow and glitter-stars... but it bit me and scurried under the refrigerator!!!

So... errr...

it's just the pom-pom dance I'm afraid.

Well, Ive had an interesting birthday so far - not one I'd want to repeat as its been very stressful teaching a bunch of students stuff that I am only one step ahead of and seeing my 'to do' pile grow remorsely higher. So its nice to relax at INTPf, eat my cake, probably die of food poisoning Cobra and Anthile, put on my nice comfy socks and listen to some great music and happy birthdays. I loved the youtube of Iron and Wine Cryptonia - it reminded me of the Moulin Rouge scene, Roxanne. I love dancing and those dancers were stunning - and I never realised you were such a hippy! And my cute happy birthday spacemen and the picture of Cobra - I wouldn't worry about the unibrow Cobra, its not that bad. Thank you kidege and chimera for your lovely, kind words - you are both fantastic people. Thanks Walfin for the skin :D Now Cog, I wouldn't be so horrible as to steal the skin of another 20 year old so I was hoping you could knock some up in the lab - so my skin might look like, I dunno, say Hannah Montana's. Thanks for the offer of that charming arm but that's what I look like at the moment (you don't know what birthday I am celebrating - did I tell you I was 80?). Lor I LOVE the pom pom dancers I swear one of those pom poms IS Noddy's soul - he's having a whale of a time. Fleur, you put me to shame - I don't know how you can be so talented. Thank you to The Fury and Madonness for your funny, sweet pics :)

Most of all thank you to Snowqueen - a very talented and beautiful person. I am stunned that you wrote the poem and drew the picture - I have printed them off as a birthday card. Can't wait to meet up - if only I can escape the clutches of this wretched institution I have joined. Performativity - huh. I am now going to sip the first of a few glasses of champagne.

Cheers to you all :D

Happy birthday Nia!
(I saw this earlier, I just got sidetracked when I was hunting for something... =/ so sorry it's late)

[FLV]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uc80G6Yzu04[/FLV] (the C of E asked them to write this, and I have it on my ipod, so I spent a while trying to hunt down a few of their other songs with no luck =/ I thought you might find it funny though)

And for your other prezzie:

(edit: Okay... it's not working on my computer for some reason now, so here's the link --> http://www.picpaste.com/pics/sl372076.1256618630.jpg

Soo.. yes! Happy birthdays!

*thinks about it for a bit*
The problem with lab grown skin is that I'll need to remove your current skin before I can put the new stuff on, in effect you'll be skinless for a couple of weeks, and that's not fun.
OR
I could liquefy a small child (the younger the better, a couple of babies would be ideal) then revert it's cells back to stem cells, mix this with some moisturizer, then airbrush it onto you for that "good as new" regenerative effect.
(a procedure derived from popular, if not so traditional, Chinese medicine)
