I have a severe panic disorder. And I have experienced utmost similar situations (perhaps even more extreme) as presented by Dove.
Duxwing, You are not in any moral position to tell anybody that understanding is useless.
You should be quiet.
And let those of us who know our people reach out and help them out of their condition.
And isn't that exactly the sort of immature J that you described another person as? You are hoist by your own petard.
But you should keep your mouth shut.
Wherever there is a lack of understanding as much hell as you has raised in this thread. No! I will not allow anyone nor you Duxwing, to condemn people as being invalid, when you have stated our condition as an incapability of understanding.
I stated that understanding will not help her on a timescale relevant to her mental health and then advised her to leave the house. From context, you should have reasoned that understanding her in-laws implied to staying in the house while doing so. Understanding them later is fine, but staying in that house while trying to is needlessly dangerous, like sitting in a burning building while trying to invent the fire extinguisher.
You have shown such stupidity that you should be quiet, when it comes to moral condemnation.
P.S. Having a bad day/week/month? As surprised as I am by your outburst, there's no sense in badgering someone for something done in the heat of the moment.
