Daydreaming and Narcissism

So, I've noticed that INTP's tend to be the stereotypical daydreaming type (yes? no?), and I was wondering: How many of you catch other characters in your daydreams talking about how awesome you are? Not directly, of course, but for some plausible reason. (Well, not always directly)

I ask because I started noticing this recently, and I can't help laughing every time I realize it's happening. So I started wondering: Am I just narcissistic or do other INTP's do this? Or are all INTP's narcissistic?

It's just you >.<

My daydreams have never been self-referential...well maybe once or twice, or several. That doesn't mean anything.

Nope, it is not just you. In fact, I thought it was only me.

Usual subject of narcissist daydreaming is some special ability I possess and other people talking about it in awe. I laugh at my-silly-self too, when I notice that.

When I daydream, the naked, big tittied babes I rescue from dragons, supervillains, or poor reasoning usually compliment the length and volume of my penis.

I don't often find this happening, as I don't often daydream, at least not in the terms of what I perceive daydream to mean. Daydream has the connotation of being a bit, for lack of motivation to search for a better word, as there almost always is one, a bit fruity. As yeti put it, day dreams refer to a lapse in conscious regulation of thought that leads to a semiconscious dream state where your subconscious desires manifest themselves in your brain, aka heavy chested naked women wanting anything to do with him, dragons existing, and having a big penis.

I more often find myself pursuing a theory or a piece of writing I am thinking up to the point where I forget to consciously regulate other tasks at hand, such as driving, actually washing myself in the shower, or taking an exam. Some people might call this ADD. There is a definite, if not easily recognized difference between these two occurrences.

To re-answer your question, no, I don't often find myself ruminating over the idea of people calling me awesome, as this would be entirely egotistical. In your case, however, I feel as though if this takes place during an ACTUAL daydream, the formerly described event, it could be a subconscious desire for people to recognize a certain self perceived talent or strength that you feel has gone unnoticed or unrewarded. Along similar lines, perhaps you believe yourself not to have achieved recognition for self perceived superiority, and you really are an egotistical prick. Who knows.

I can't say I experience this. From what I understand about the functions, daydreaming (the kind that play out in your head) is more of an Ni thing than Ne. Daydreams dealing with one's own awesomeness definitely sounds like Ni and Se to me.

I used to quite a lot when I was younger, but it was nothing more than a coping mechanism for a lack of confidence.

Now its very important to not entertain such thoughts, even if you know you have advantages in certain areas, because they will lead you into your ego and thus away from the truth.

As others have said, I don't really... "daydream." I think it was CoryJames who talked about working theories around in your head; this is more what I would tend to do. Analyzing is to the INTP as daydreaming is to the INFP. I think.

It's nice to know that people think you're awesome, but it's also rather awkward. Analyzing and studying tend to be more mentally stimulating and less awkward than dreaming about people figuratively smooching your rear.

Usually when I daydream, I drift off into fantasies of what I could accomplish and become. Big, famous and powerful. But all of this is the result of my drive to be appreciated as a human being and helping others by being in a position of power.

Immature INTP's come across as a bit narcissistic, but eventually (if ever) we will grow out of it, once we realize and understand that there are things in life that are far greater and more important than our own brains. ;)

I don't recall anybody in my daydreams complimenting me entirely too much.. usually I just plan out things, such as pieces I'm working on, homework, classes, college, work, relationships and so on.. I fantasize sometimes though, I admit, but I don't really... daydream about people talking about how awesome I am.

Although in real life, it's not like people shouldn't start doing that.

Narcissism actually stems from self-hate.

Did you know that?

narcissists secreltly hate all others as well, did you know that?

(they just hide it better than the ones we categorize as sadist. they are your ultimate false-friend)

oh... and did you know... that they are probably taking Narcissistic Personality Disorder out of the DSM-5... because "nowadays" it is considered healthy to be a narcissist??

Really? That is very interesting. I definitely experience what the OP does. It's not always someone discussing how awesome I am, though. It would be more accurate to describe it as me thinking about what others think of me, with varying degrees of plausability.

This is a pretty accurate description, though I tend to just get upset with myself for indulging in these kinds of fantasies.

Agh.. I definitely had more thoughts on this that I think made sense to me, at some point, but I can't really remember/communicate them.

I am really interested to see how this discussion advances, though, since I believed this was an INTP thing and apparently that may not be true.

It's an IxxP thing.

It isn't an IXXP specific thing. Are you insinuating that IXXPs may be more prone to it than others, and that is what we are discussing?

I'm not sure, but it's rather chilly.
I daydream occasionally, but they've never been narcissistic. I occasionally put up a show of narcissism, as to make me seem less painfully introverted, but it's no more than a show. I've never thought that highly of myself.

I can relate to both sides of the fence; I often do CoryJames' " find myself pursuing a theory or a piece of writing I am thinking up to the point where I forget to consciously regulate other tasks at hand, such as driving, actually washing myself in the shower, or taking an exam." and peruse daydreams about things more idealistic - like promoting self-enlightenment among the masses. They aren't usually self-gratifying except for fulfilling my desire to help/alleviate sufferings. ~.- To my mind, it is a healthy thing to do in moderation.

Have you considered that perhaps you aren't being narcissistic but considering situations in which you do well. That's more a self-actualizing sort of day dream.

Though I do day dream scenarios involving a plot or a theory I generally day dream more in sensations. I see a really blue sky and start listings the sorts of things that I've seen that are equally blue. Or I wonder what it would feel like to be up there.

I'm starting to think I might very well be ISTP. Except I am so fascinated by the theoretical and I'm very intuitive. Bler.

I am very pleased that a form of absentmindedness has been named after me.
