What do you do to vent your creativity? Are you a musician? An artist? A writer? Are you into pottery? What's your deal?

I play bass; a handmade Peavey Cirrus BXP; active. The style I play varies, but I only ever use my hands. A pick is too impersonal. Slap/pop, double thump, tap, finger pick ect.

So, if you play an instrument, what is it? How do you play it? If you paint/sketch/doodle, what style/s do you do and what type of pencil/paint/pen do you use?

You get the jist. Alright, you creative so-and-sos; get posting.

I program a bit, but it's still in the very early stages. I practice parkour, which is my main creative outlet, it's very highly rewarding for me, finding a problem that I can't overcome and then working towards it. I'm not generally a persistent/determined person, only when it comes to parkour and climbing, and whatever happens to catch my interest at any given time, of course.

I don't do well with the traditional creative arts. I'm nearly tonedeaf, my writing's bland, at best and I'm not worth much in the ways of painting/drawing.

I write. Sometimes just for myself. Sometimes for the role-playing game industry. And, given that I write for that group of folks, I play those games as well. Very nice way to tap my creativity.

Good answer WildC. Any type of creativity is creative.

I write. Used to be a volunteer firefighter, which was application of a hierarchy of options on chaos to bring chaos under control. Very creative, plus you got to break windows and doors sometimes. Heavenly. Gave it up after losing some hearing in an explosion -- afraid I'd miss a radio call to get out of a building and get someone hurt.

casually playing guitar in my mental arena
I play piano (Yamaha acoustic piano) and guitar (a red mexican strat with Gotoh tuners and a Seymour Duncan Hot Rod pickup on the bridge)

Oh how I'd love to pick up electric bass and cello!

I'm also an artist. My favorite media would be mixed media, pen and ink, charcoal, and printmaking. I'm really into modern art at the moment. I'll post some of my work later.

Artistic things are really my strong point. I'm mostly very modest about it.
I'm mostly into drawing, using any media I can get my hands on. I love sculpture...it's simply amazing, and I'm really good at it. At the moment, I'm sketching the kitten on my lap in charcoal (the charcoal on my fingers is probably ruining the keyboard, but it's old anyway.) I'm also into photo manipulation on the computer (I only have Adobe Photoshop Elements...so sad...), and a little bit of plain drawing on the computer. I want a tablet, but I'm stuck with a mouse.
Writing is another talent of mine, though I don't showcase it. I'm attempting to write a book, but I'm stuck right now. In class, I have a notebook dedicated solely to writing short pieces...it's getting quite full. I usually write to escape the social pressure of the classroom.
Music is something I've been trying to take a step back from, simply because I don't think I could get very far in life with it considering my paralyzing stage fright and my fear of active microphones. I sing (I think I'm pretty good, and anyone who's caught me singing thinks so too), and I also play the piano. I'm pretty musically inclined...give me any instrument, and I'll play it, with a few exceptions.
I also like photography a lot. I've considered it as a career choice often. And I really want to try glassblowing, because I have a strange fascination with glass (and fire).

I hope it doesn't sound like I'm bragging. I just really like artistic things.

Hmm... my creative vents are probably music, music, oh, and music. I'm a cellist and something of a singer. Lyric baritone to be precise. I'm quite good on the cello, but my voice isn't as polished as I'd like it to be, but I've sung quite a few solos, and have gotten over the issue of stage fright.

Lucky you. Just the thought of performing on-stage makes me shiver. All those eyes on you, the pressure of all those minds judging you...ick. I can't stand it.

Depending on who you perform for, that might or might not be true.
I always found that the whole "imagine the audience is in their underwear" thing never worked for me...but maybe that's because someone told me that before I went out to play piano for a bunch of old people. I think it had me too disgusted to play right...

Actually I would have the same thing, chime, but when I go onstage I kind of meditate myself in playing. I completely shut myself off from the world and just play. In my mind there are no eyes, no judges, just me and the bass. It's soothing. When you lose your fear of being judged, you loose a good bit of your judgements.

I sing simple things about the house and every now and then doodle something in my file (which is now covered in psychotic ramblings. I mean, the weirdest things.), I've been playing bass for a year, with a pretty steep learning curve. I'm quite good at the bass, but I'd love to learn to play chapman stick. They're the best instruments ever.

In the center of the world. (As opposed to the ear
I started on piano, but I didn't have one for a long time. I would go to friend's houses and improvise (they were usually glad to have someone playing their piano, as most go unplayed). I found one for $85 a year ago, and those same friends paid to have it tuned.

Remarkably, it's a fantastic old upright, and has a tone the the tuner says is so good it doesn't make sense. None of the strings are broken, and the construction of the instrument is way ahead of its time.

I can't stand digital keyboards, even the thousand dollar models- and I've played some of the most recent. They're incomparable to the real thing. Thus, I started to think about picking up guitar (before I got my piano, but while still practicing at friend's houses), so that I could make music in a portable fashion.

I got one from a friend who was moving up and getting a Taylor; he sold me his old one for $90. It was a $250 guitar, so I was very satisfied. It was an Applause (by Ovation). I played it for quite a while, picked the instrument up very quickly.

All the while I'd been thinking about strings instruments for a while- I asked my entire family to pitch in for Christmas/Birthday present & get me a cello (birthday is December 30), so not 3 months after the guitar, I got a cello. (It was another 1.3 years before I finally got a piano of my own).

I have been writing for as long as I can remember. I used to sit in my closet at night and write poetry that is comparable to haikus in third grade. I've done a substantial amount of writing since then, but no complete work.

I remember one my mom once found by memory, on accident... "good night, good luck, sleep tight, like a duck." :)

I lead a band currently, and do most of the composition & orchestration, and all of the lyric writing. Violin, Cello, Guitar, Electric Guitar, Irish Penny Whistle, Bass (acoustic or electric, we have several at our disposal), Piano, Accordion are the instruments we have between ourselves- we've barely tapped the surface of possible sounds.

And of course one of us has an iMac with garageband, which is a plethora of options in its own right.

I recently bought a Guild GAD 50, which is a beautiful guitar; I also frequently play my little brother's Mini Martin LXM, though, which is astounding for its size.

I don't use a pick on guitar, and have a serious fingerpicking style that is almost classical. Still, I strum gladly & loudly with a raw fingertip. The calluses on that finger are a bit ridiculous. I use Cleartone 12gauge strings on the Guild, Phosphor Bronze, and so far it is opening up very nicely; it really sounds like a $2000 Martin, with a little more clarity on the high end.

Also, I am kinesthetic/auditory in brain functioning, and thus love using film for a medium, though I have just dabbled. My primary attack at film was a video blog that was attempting to be a documentary of my life (link below). I tried video editing for the first time when I was about 12 or so, however, and made a preview for a film me and a friend were writing the script for. (We never finished.)

I had a time where I did drawing for a bit, and got really into it. I have some interesting pictures from that time (I started while I was in the hospital, totally sucked up in the weirdest romantic situation I've yet been involved in), and am glad I did it while I did. I'd love to pick it up again, but I feel I can't do everything.

A few songs from the band:
purevolume.com/craftsmen
(we have a website under construction- http://ttech.co.nr/sapientia/craftsmen - [click "music" in sidebar])

The Vlog I ran for a while:
http://www.doculife.blogspot.com (be sure to check the "sweet reruns" section in the sidebar, if you don't want to go through every episode- the first episode is terrible, FYI, so I don't advise starting there. Start on Day 2 if you want to go chronologically.)

I draw a lot, mostly with black pen. I've never liked using colour because it takes away from the detail (I can be very picky when it comes to detail).

I don't really like using pencils of paint because it's too hard to work with and if I don't think a picture turned out 100% right, I have to throw it out.

Yeah, I really easily qualify cello as my favorite sounding instrument. I'm still easily most gifted at piano, yet. The cello has been the most difficult instrument, but perhaps also the most rewarding. It at least gives the piano a run for its money.

I have been looking into an electric cello for a while now... that may be my next big purchase after a motorcycle.

Which makes me wonder... I'm going to just start a new thread for that.

You use garageband? NO NO NO! Get Logic or adobe audition! Garageband is terrible!

You picked a good instrument to start out on. Damn clumsy bass...
The band sounds pretty complete - but don't use garageband!

I make computer games, namely the 'Last of the Patriots' game series.

Garage band is fine. (btw, are you pronouncing it 'gaar-idge band'? I have friend who is Irish, and her parents grew up in Ireland together, and they all say 'garage' as I inquired).

It's not a bad program, and it's free with mac. Be a little more objective, don't be a fan boy. :P

I mean, I'd love to have Logic, Reason, or Ableton Live, but money is money, and we really don't even need software to do anything beyond record, really, at this point.

I pronounce garage as you inquired, but so does anyone that isn't from America (who speaks English).

I've got reason, adobe, logic, cubase and ableton. All free.

Get a torrent download program and start downloading them. They're very useful and fun to play around with. Garageband, pfft...

It's the 'windows movie maker' of music.

I envy all the musicality that's flowing around here. I have to be tone deaf.

In terms of creativity, writing is about it. That and problem solving. I view almost everything as a problem to be understood and solved. The more creative the solution the better.

But some days I just wish I could sing and express myself with sound. I'm an aural cripple :(

LOR, no worries. Just sit back and enjoy the music, it's really quite possibly more enjoyable than making it, if done correctly.

--

Well, cabbo, considering I run linux, it's not up to me- everything I can use is already free. Unfortunately, my computer isn't quite good enough to run any of the fancy stuff.

As for my friend with garageband, he's got more illegally downloaded material than he could pay for if his family liquidated every possible asset to their name, and he says that the most recent copy of ableton (for mac) is two versions back (version 5- version 7 was just released).

And honestly, do you even vaguely tap the potential of those programs? Especially multiple of them? I mean, you can take college classes here on each one of those. That's just plain overkill.

I've got a friend who is about to cash out for the latest ableton. I'll just borrow his mac-top when I need it.

Okay, they're not mine, they're my brother's, who is now in his third year of music technology. And yes, he does tap the potential. Pretty damn well. He also has about a hundred other programs (although most only do one thing, and some do the same), and hasn't paid a dime.

You don't need the most recent version. Just get him to download adobe, it's simple and useful, and a hell of a lot better than garageband.

I told him he didn't need the most recent, and he was irked. 1 version back, he said, was ok, but 2 was too much.

I'll tell him to get adobe, if for no other reason than to satisfy you. ;P

I write stories. Usually, they are fictional ones.

Also, since I'm still in the middle of my education, I can use the essays there as a mean of showing creativity, too.

And due to that, I'm of the opinion that one shouldn't force oneself to write something as something that is done by sheer willpower is more likely to be a bad product. So I usually write my essays whenever I feel like writing them.

Also, this goes well together with my opinion on deadlines. I don't like them, as they tend to make people panic and thus they directly affect the quality of the result. Which is why I don't concern my mind with deadlines that much. However, I am rather precise about appointment times. Actually, to the extent where people who have multiple appointments with me tend to wonder about my exactness, as I tend to arrive 0-2 minutes before or after the appointed time.

Play Irish/Celtic music on violin, write songs (lyrics), ride horseback, play word games like Scrabble and strategy games like Chess, read/research and write on topics of interest....read extensively whenever time allows.

That's awesome. I was watching some youtube vids of the ventriloquist of the year the other day. Spiffy stuff.

You have any vids by chance? It's really fantastic to see, I've always wanted to see it in person.

Yeah. Passive aggressiveness taking over my creative side, which is what I was trying to voice. I probably shouldn't have posted that, even still.

And I did know why. What I meant was I didn't know why I was so angry.

I write well enough for me to be considered good, but I'm not persistent enough to finish writing a book, which I'd like to do. Oh, well.

I really like storytelling, though. Making up plot threads while convincing others it's a real story/ occurrence is really fun. Sometimes, I remind myself of Petter, the main character of the Ringmaster's Daughter. I've certainly got ideas but no will to pursue them to the end (in writing).

Anyway, insulting people could be considered a creative vent :P I haven't found good insults from my peers, though. All boring ****s, ****s and ****s. You'd think that swearing will evolve past a certain stage. Interestingly enough, one of the best insults I've ever heard came from my then 11 year-old cousin. Pity I can't remember it. It was the first time I laughed so hard in 4 years.

i love music, from classical to heavy metal (except rap- it's so stupid it actually hurts my head and irritates the crap out of me), but have no musical talent whatsoever. used to paint oil portraits but that got to be too much like a job....collecting and researching antiques keeps me occupied............oh, and no offense but ventriloquist dummies and clowns are eeeevvvviiillllll :D .............but ventriloquism is definitely an interesting choice

Lying is wrong, aphasia.
Classic to heavy metal isn't that big a jump, depending on the type of classic. I mean, look at S+M (symphony and metalica), which, despite being absolutely terrible, was really just a load of metalica songs played by more instruments and better performers.

Stop overusing the '...', ye eigit. "Multiple exclamation marks, a sure sign of the diseased mind" - Terry Pratchett (I think, although it might have been Douglas Adams).

And, folks, that is the correct spelling of eigit.

Lying is wrong, aphasia.

That would depend. In this case I'd disagree, since I usually tell them the truth some time later (If I remember to), but you'll be right if I was lying about more important matters (tax evasion? adultery?). I'm a bit biased about this, since many people talk about how lying is wrong, without acknowledging their own lies, half-truths or omissions. Yay, authority figures.

And, folks, that is the correct spelling of eigit.

Wow. You live and learn. New insults are always nice to know.

While you're at it, don't forget to tell them that to protect themselves, they have to put their right hand on top of their head while siddling like crabs. If you can get access to a kindergarten, that would be great :D.
