So, I'm a bit out of my element posting on a gaming thread because I'm not that much of a gamer. However, I am really into Civilization. I haven't played the newest version and I've heard that there are versions out for some of the consol e systems. 1) Is this true? 2) If so, which systems? And 3) has anyone here played said versions?

Sorry that I can't help you; I haven't played it in quite a while. But I used to play it a lot, and nothing else, just like you. The latest version I know is Civ 4. My favourite is Civ 2 though. Civ 3 has nice graphics. Civ 4 looks fantastic but I find it boring.

(Oh, and I see you like Lego! That was what I was playing all the time before I discovered Civilization. :D)

Same here, I dabbled a little after the 2nd version but always went back.

Do you hate me when I say that I like Colonization more?

@Anthile: as far as I'm concerned, we're even, since I've had the pleasure of killing you in that other thread ;)

Civ 4 is the most recent. If you're at all into the mods, check out Fall from Heaven 2. It's like a whole new game experience.

I've played all the Civs from 1 to 4. I like Civ 4 the best with all the expansions (haven't gotten Colonization yet).

I've tried the XBOX 360 version but its has too fast a pace for me. I generally like to have long marathon like games.

Hi Felan, what do you think of Civ 4 without the expansions (which is what I used to play)? Still the best? My reservation with the post-Civ2 versions is that, although the interface becomes more exciting, the actual game/storyline loses its punch fairly quickly, I get bored in the early stages of my empire and start a new game. With each new version of Civilization, it seems I stop earlier in the game.

Hmmm, I would still rate Civ 4 higher than Civ 2. Though only because it is fan-moddable, using built in Python scripting. Admittedly I haven't played with the scripting much so maybe its not all that great.

I really liked Alpha Centauri quite a lot too. There were more genuine strategic paths to victory than vanilla Civ.

I loved Civilization 3. 4 lags too much on my computer, 'tis a shame.

And is the annoyance that I described above in any way familiar to you? If so, do you agree that it's more of a problem with Civ 4? Or not at all? Looking forward to your opinion. Well maybe I should give those Civ4 expansion packs a try. :)

PS: I never tried Alpha Centauri. Guess all of my time went to Civ :)

The annoyance being that base Civ 4 is boring?

I've been playing Civ 4 with the expansions so long and its been so long since I played Civ 2, I guess its hard to be objective. A couple of things that I seem to recall is that railroads in Civ 2 were way too powerful and the frequency of absurd battle results too common in Civ 2; I don't mind an occassional tank losing to a spearman but it was way too common in Civ 2. I also like the unit experience.

Another thing I didn't like in Civ 2 was having to create spies to fortify and establish borders that the ai can't just travel over your lands willy nilly.

Exactly. It's plain impossible for me to play beyond, say, the middle ages. Can't say that about Civ 2. Anyway, from your reply I'm guessing you don't have the same problem with Civ 4 as I do.

PS - I do share your opinion that Civ 4 has a number of important improvements.

Hmm, I don't find Civ 4 boring. I probably have an atypical gaming style though. For me I am telling a story on top of the game, I rarely play it to win but I usually do win.

Civ 4 is fun for for the first week of playing. I got bored of it after I found out how easy it is too win. Just takes too much time with the turns. I played all the expansions. It's cool how you can nuke cities in the end though.

If I were to make a Civ 5, I would make it so that it was real time instead of turn based. It would be more of a mix between Civ and Warcraft. The AI would be a whole lot better too.

I'm rather curious what difficulty level everyone was playing Civilization IV at. Particularly you guys who are calling it easy / boring?

Yeah on Noble I still find Civ 4 fairly challenging, actually. I've won a few times and I've lost a few times. Below Noble it's relatively easy once you get the hang of it, but at Noble...seriously, there's a lot of thought involved in playing on Noble. And of course above Noble it's hard, if only because you're penalized above that point (where Noble is the "break even" difficulty where you're balanced with the computer).

Seriously though, FFH2 is fantastic by comparison with Civ 4 (and Civ 4 is itself rather fantastic). It's much more complicated with a myriad of new mechanics and legitimate specialization--the tech tree is actually very, very branched, instead of linear like in vanilla Civ. Upgrades are more in-depth, and combat is made more interesting with things like magic and such mixing up the more traditional combat in new, dynamic ways. It's especially good for multiplayer, as diplomacy isn't quite as huge of a deal due to that very same specialization of tech trees (and diplomacy in multiplayer tends to be kinda spotty).

I should find my disks and play some FFH2 some time...

Anyone in for some FreeCiv? I mean, I suck at Civ, but I guess it would be fun to play it with some other people from here.
