I went through my hacker phase in freshman year of high school. I hacked a couple of hotmail and yahoo accounts via "Secret answer" its amazing how idiotic some people are when it comes to securing their private accounts, also did some phishing which I found hilarious. I also "hacked" other things, but its classified information.

Meh, not really. The latest thing I did was open up command prompt on a school computer which had it disabled and "accidentally" deleted the password for the administrator account along with disabling deep freeze and the firewall. The teacher freaked out so I wasn't allowed to touch computers for the rest of the year. Oh yeah, other kids called me a hacker even though I never actually hacked anything. During that time I had a friend that actually was a hacker to some level and he was somehow able to get the school server password, created his own server admin account, and fked with the school printers by printing out some things the teachers didn't like. Oh yeah, and he would remotely shut down random computers in the school for laughs. It got even better when he shared his secret with some other people... good times... lol. From that time I still have some school IP addresses and the server password assuming they haven't changed it. If anyone wants to (or is able to?) screw with them I can PM the info to you... lol.

I can find the stuff amusing but no, I'm not really a hacker.

Y'know you don't need your own microsat to be virtually untraceable, if you can set up a network of laser transmitter/receivers you can remote access a computer and when the cops, or whoever, come to track you down you'll get plenty of warning as they go from rooftop to rooftop tracing the signal back to it's source, assuming you didn't do something stupid like buy the computer you're hacking through.

The old way seen in movies is to use a proxy network through the net itself, but whose side do you think the ISPs are on?

General hacks: I recently wrote a shell script to rename and organize batches of files for a couple projects I'm working on.

Netsec specific: Nothing major recently. I sometimes code security tools for fun, though. Have a half completed packet sniffer and wrote a DDoSer a while back. About a year ago, there was something wrong with the internet in the apartment I was living in, so I cracked several WEP keys and used another ("secured") network.

You are only getting RIAA attention when you seed. If you'd download that stuff and move on then you aren't that much of a pirate.

The ones RIAA want to kill are those who buy stuff or borrow stuff, copy it, and put it out as a torrent as new material.

It was WEP yes, but I can do WPA too. In fact, I have a 35gb dictionary.

WPA2? but damn I know the software for WEP only. That's why I thought it's useless to go wireless cracking.

I use the word "hack" to mean modifying something to act in a (usually useful or interesting) way in which it was not originally intended.

Running a program to capture wireless handshakes and another to brute force the password is using those programs exactly as they were intended (well, one might argue the were meant for use on ones own network), and thus, not hacking. Cracking maybe, but I like to think of cracking as more manual.

My latest hack was probably a script I wrote to launch applications in Windows with redefined system variables that aren't supposed to be changed outside of individual command prompts.

Oh, and just fucking around with HIEW's x64 disassembler, changing instructions in some applications. And playing around with the latest Ollydbg updates and... :borg:

I heard that is the actually definition. Gaining unauthorized privileges is cracking.

By that definition we can hack houses, hardwares, cars, and lots of other things.

I haven't seen anything posted here that's really incriminating. Many torrents are perfectly legal, even on TPB. Network penetration, brute force password recovery, stress testing (DDOS), and most other forms of "hacking"/"cracking" perfectly legal in the right context. I haven't seen anything posted here that directly implies that anything was done in an illegal context.

My last hack?

Instead of getting vertex array object code to work I caved and used vertex pointers instead. Feel dirty about it, but it works... at least for triangulated faces. Gotta fix that...
