Which do you prefer? And why?

Android. Open-source, easy to modify*, cheap.

*I laugh at all the fools who spend hours jailbreaking their iPhones and just end up ruining it: Androids were made for messing around with, don't waste your money on Apples BS.

Android 4.1... much nicer and less restrictive than iOS. Have not tried it on a smart phone though, so I'll leave myself out of your vote.

They are mirror images. iOS is the better interface for a phone. Simpler, tighter, better for a mobile interface. Android, while improved (4.1), is the poorer interface. However it reverses for development, I much prefer Java on Android against objective C for iOS.

I never understood the point of a smartphone if you could just use a basic phone(keyboard, email, camera, tools) and carry around an ipad or tablet. Yes smartphones are smaller and portable, but have fun browsing and using apps in an interface that IMO, is annoying and hard to look at/be productive.

Hopefully the next Ipad becomes smaller to make it more portable.

Get a Nexus 7. For $200 you get the latest version of stock Android (4.1), a Tegra 3 (quad-core) processor, and a really nice screen. It's a nexus so you can count on timely updates directly from Google.

I have a Nexus 7, Galaxy Nexus, iPhone 4S, various iPads and every Kindle they have. When I get a SMS or email you can hear them chattering all around the house. Apparently there are many others with this problem.
