agree to disagree

I am starting to hate this phrase. Everytime I get in a debate the people I am talking to use it like some sacred word that can just end any argument. Does anyone else encounter this?

Yeah it kind of annoys me too, in my head it generally translates too "Let me be wrong in peace."

I actually do this all the time. Of course, I'm INFJ so that is why. I hate arguments and seem them as largely useless, and strive to find common ground. If the other person refuses, I walk away and or shut it down.

I hate this phrase when it's preceded by a faith-based argument.

However I tend to use a variation to end irritating discussions that have come to an impasse or degraded into personal insults; 'This is pointless.' It's rather common on the forum actually, though I suppose it's unnecessarily aggressive and inciteful.

If one party refuses to see common ground or to adjust views they cannot support, this stout refusal to continue or 'wall' is ultimately the only way to end a discussion/conflict peacefully (unless both parties agree to temporarily cease, do research and pick up where they left off sometime later).

I once had a guy say that to me in an argument over whether English was a romance language or not. It made my head explode, especially considering he knew I was an English major.

I would guess people say that so they can back out of an argument/debate they're losing, while maintaining their dignity. I think it's a reasonable way to back out of a conflict, especially if the thing you're debating doesn't have a definite answer.

(Actually, I haven't been able to perform the dance in ten years as a married man is categorically wrong.)

Man, the last time a person said 'agree to disagree' my reply was along the line of "You fail to articulate a justification of your argument. Fuck you. You are just simply wrong."

I like to debate ans sometimes it gets heated. However, if someone provides evidence and or reasoning that invalidates my own I can concede defeat but never go so low as to agree to disagree.

I do something like this. I make a sweeping obscene generalization about the other person's argument that would appear to tip the scales into my favor. This almost always baits the person back into picking the discussion back up.
