Do INTPs have a problem losing to people?
Do you have trouble accepting a defeat?

In my case I'm only competitive if I'm challenged in a game/activity I'm proficient in. I thought this post would be interesting because I've met individuals who cannot accept defeat or hold a grudge regardless of his skill or investment in the game.

Fantastic topic!

In the game of Go, you have to realize and accept when some of your stones are dead. It really sucks, but sometimes if you keep on trying to fight to make your stones live you only make it worse for yourself. The best thing you can do is get some use from the dead stones. Threaten to save them in a way that helps your position and forces your opponent to respond in a less-than-ideal way.

I only have a problem accepting defeat when I am defeated at something I have put a lot of time and effort into trying to be good at. Fortunately, though, I don't tend to put time or effort into anything.

This is the problem.

I find that I'm the same way, and I think most INTPs would be.

I think this is why we INTPs value competence, so we won't lose (much) in what we're interested in.

I'm competitive, but not much more competitive than the next person. If I lose, I lose, but I'll end up working to prevent another loss.

Yes, I'm the same way. That's why most of my art/music/graphic projects never really get past the initial stage.

Winning and losing are nothing but human constructs created by simple folks.

I always win because I always learn.

I thought it might be more of a Baby Boomer cultural thing than an INTP thing. We were kinda sorta led to believe we could do anything we set our minds to, so failure is kind of WTF?

side note: RobertJ, what's that photo for your avatar? It looks very much like a fellow who was used as a model by the Smithsonian back in 186x or so for its photographs of
U.S. Civil War uniforms and equipment; he's wearing an Army dress hat with a brass eagle. Is it another Smithsonian photo? Thanks!

I have difficulty accepting failure or incompetence in myself and used to become extremely distressed when I did not meet my high standards. People would seek to reassure me and I learned to hide it behind false apathy [as time went on this became more and more genuine] due to I disliked the idea of depending on them for security.
Now, I do not usually demonstrate my full potential, constantly second guessing myself for fear of the disappointment failure may bring.

Glad you asked, EditorOne.
It's a photo of Emperor Norton I, Emperor of the U.S. and Protector of Mexico.
