Premise: It has been established that technology convergence would allow for the construction of a device called a Lightsaber as a true holographic device but with my current understanding of physics not as a solid hologram capable of combat.

Hypothesis: In 2005 I had the idea of using a oblong cylinder lens that transformed from perfect circle on one end to flat at the other end of the cylinder in a smooth transition. By shining a laser threw the lens the intensity would create a distributed effect similar to burning paper with a magnifying class over a distance proportional to the lens gradient. (In the show "MythBuster" they were able to star a fire with an ice magnifying glass in winter condition(non windy)) Viewed from the side in schematic the focal laser line segment is slanted between the top left and top bottom right vertices in a protrusion of rectangle length again of lens design from the hilt. In this would be adequate to cut object by lumens density of laser watt output.

In 2006 I discoverd this picture in Popular Science Magazine.

3d_laser_plasma_air_image_fig1.jpg

In reevaluation, the laser blade could be produced perpendicular without slant plus it would be visible by plasmafication of oxygen atoms. But with this come a problem; ozone and risk of blindness by stray beams.

So to counter this problem I included sonic projection within the design. Sonic project would resonate the oxygen without a container in open atmospheric as if it was in a self contains flute. Attuned to the properties of air density sophisticated standing wave algorithms would induce feedback loops of photoreceptors in the hilt to detect what frequencies induce diffraction for maximum glow spread in the defined length parameterless with least lumens of input with no ozone or accidental blindness as ramifications.

If correct Holographic Lightsabers would be possible visualy as seen in the movies but lacking in solidity.

If in the future Algorithms are improved to the point of nano technological scale my speculation is that similar to non-Newtonian fluid but as a newly discovered field of Continuum mechanics; non-Newtonian Gas.

Wouldn't the lightsaber be a bit disjointed, like, multiple dots instead of one line?

Is this some thing to do with diffraction? sorry, n00b question.

When the dots are in close enough proximity they fuse together.

http://singularityhub.com/2010/09/22/7mm-thick-pico-projector-can-produce-a-70-inch-image-video/

Japan’s Explay Ltd recently announced that it has begun to ship its pico projector engines to developers around the world. The Explay Projector Engine is only 6.7 cubic centimeters in size and just 7mm thick (~1/4 of an inch). Despite its tiny dimensions, the pico projector generates 14 lumens laser light on just 1.3 Watts of power (1.8 with control circuits) and can produce images 7 to 70 inches in size. Resolution is a respectable 852×480 and with a laser based system it should stay in sharp focus over a wide range (20 to 200cm). While Explay has yet to announce which manufacturers will be using their projector they did say that they expect it to appear in devices as early as February of 2011. Looks like we’ll need to watch for it at CES. Explay plans on improving their projector engine further. They hope that the end of 2011 will see the arrival of a 25 lumens WXGA 1366×768 version. A member of the R&D team in Israel (part of XDM Ltd) shows off the 14 lumens pico projector in a prototype testing rig in the video below. Not a bad image for the world’s smallest laser projector.
While Explay’s pico projector doesn’t have the best picture quality stats we’ve seen, it’s pretty damn good. And with such a small size, the Explay projector could be easily incorporated into many phones and other mobile devices. Flip has been working to develop projector accessories, maybe the next one will simply be embedded in the camera. I’m excited to see where these smallest laser-based projectors will lead us. They may be an integral part of the next generation of human-computer interfaces, allowing us to use cameras and projectors instead of keyboards and mice. In the meantime, a crisp color picture coming out of a device smaller than a pack of gum is cool enough for me.

Personally I'd go with a graphene circular saw, the graphene itself isn't very rigid being effectively two dimensional like a sheet of paper but like a sheet of paper if you spin it fast enough the outside edge becomes rigid and being graphene that's a mono-molecular edge.

Well obviously the saw is a lot cheaper but it doesn't look nearly as cool to run at your opponent waving something that looks like an electric razor-pizza cutter hybrid. I mean, picture Vader whipping out a graphene circular saw and slicing Luke's hand off with it...

That's not how you make a lightsaber, at least not the Star Wars oriented kind. True, a real life one could be different, or similar to how they are in the source material. A laser beam is collimated light and must be cut off somewhere to obtain a sabre. Without mirrors it wouldn’t have any density or as much energy. A hologram is actually a contraption, you need lasers and prisms or beam splitters to make one work anyway.

Looks like kendo with glowsticks, I wonder how the meta works does a hit anywhere on the body count as a point (are there points or is it one-hit-kill) or are there only certain valid strike zones? I see some people using both hands, one guy in the background was holding one arm behind his back in a fencing stance, it's baffling.

Do they use style points?
