Default Banned for Science?

Now I do not mean to get in the way of the justice system on this forum. And over the years of posting on forums I value a strong justice system with many swung ban hammers for people that deserved it.

I also find the bans thread entertaining as you are transparent and elaborate on the reasoning behind such bans.

I however found this one particularly entertaining;

What constitutes being banned for science? I mean, we're not in the 16th and 17th centenaries where scientists where put to the death for their heresies against Christianity.

Full disclosure, I am not religious at all, but this is somewhat historically entertaining.

Also I mean no ill will against any admin on this fine forum. I am just simply curious. I also don't stand for any form of bigotry so he/she had that one coming at least.

I read it as, "Sinny was being blamed for eroding the forum quality." Based on what the mods said in the other thread, she basically was given a month off as a test, and if the quality goes back up and things get better, then it was her; if the quality still sucks, then it wasn't. i.e., an objective test.

Of course, science is nothing without chemicals and explosions. Let's do some real science!

It's "for [the sake of] science".

Test: to see if a one month ban of Sinny results in INTP forum being great again.

Findings will be posted in 3 weeks, no doubt? :P

I'd like to mention for the record that my current semi-activity is independent of said ban. I feel a little bad about the timing. I stand by my Pit idea.

I saw it more as a well this is worth banning but if it turns out Sinny isn't this then this is worth un-banning. Basically using science to compensate for potentially inaccurate information.

Somehow temp banning Sinny has lead to an amazing discovery. Hadoblado needs to share it with us.

You know, this doesn't have much to do with this thread so feel free to ignore me, but Brontosuaries' attitude towards the end was kind of trump ish. "make this's forum great agin!! Stupid pussy politically correct mods, I take over yeh".
Anyway, good to know skinny is still around :-)

This should have been put to a public vote. Even if for no other reason than to attempt to validate scientifically.

I for one believe the forum quality has improved, but I don't believe it ought to be empirically attributed to Sinny's ban. That's just bad science.

What are your other hypotheses to explain the change? Maybe we can start testing.

Ooh let's! Brainstorm time! Okay!

Top of my head:
  1. (Elephant in the room) Parallel ban of redbaron, nemesis of Sinny
  2. More new members of a more mature demographic
  3. Shifts in forum leadership
  4. More new threads
  5. Discussion trends (for example I've noticed more career discussions)
  6. Users baring themselves more (Creeping Death's open discussion of addiction comes to mind)
  7. Less juvenile attention seekers (actually, just a better cohort of new members, period)
  8. President Trump
  9. Winter in northern hemisphere (people indoors more)
  10. Dark castle is totally in this season
  11. Moar Happy (obviously the real reason)

Yeah it's just a coincidence that when Sinny, Rixus and whatever other spamposting vapid shitlords are gone from the forum, there's a lot less shitty vapid posts.

The two things are definitely not related.

Removing negative influences gives breathing room for more positive ones. Nothing you've said here actually lessens the impact of removing Sinny and co. and if anything actually supports the fact that Sinny's presence was just offputting to proper discussion for a number of reasons.

I don't think Sinny was singlehandedly to blame for the lack of quality of the forum. That's too simple.
She still sucked, though, and I'm not sad to see her gone.

Hi tsr,

Thank you for your submission. We wanted to let you know that although your submission were very competitive, our hiring team reviewed your application and did not select it for further consideration.

We wish you all the best in your job search and hope we will have the chance to consider you for another role in the future.

I guess his chance of being considered was not very large? Or was it because he submitted a soft copy?

He could appeal, I suppose, but I heard it would not stand up in court.

I wonder which applicant was chosen though. Which forum member dick pic was the best for the "job". Does it involve more secret tapes? President Gopher would know I'm sure.

Here I've been moving and had my pc power supply broken for several days and wont have a stable internet feed for a few days yet, and I find my name's been dragged through the dirt. If you have to know, the new house has great lighting for dick pics. Not that I would have any. But if I did they would be the best, and they would also be secret. If I had any

I hope this cleared my name

Type forums are so incestuous. People tend to be on multiple forums (even if not all of them), and also when people get banned they just run the circuit of type sites so you just see them popping up in the same pool...

Personally, I've been finding it hard to find threads to post in, even though I'm INFJ myself. Could just be me and my somewhat unsocial ways. The place is very different from what it was a few years back. I can't quite remember how it used to be, but I think there used to be much more MBTI talk, whereas now it seems a more general sort of forum.

Oh my... does she ever stop with the ad hominem, and trying to pass it off as worthwhile/reasonable discussion? She seems to enjoy chasing individuals she's targeted from thread to thread and dumping poo on them.

Odd, fluffy, variable, can be good/bad, lots of emotions. All the emotions tend to make being on staff stressful. Lots of good people there though, even though many have left over the years.

I'd agree that there's less MBTI talk, although it's still there. The scales do tip more so in favor of general discussions these days, so you kind of have to dig for the decent MBTI threads/discussions. I do think I remember you, though! *waves*

Sadly... not really. INTPs try to flex to allow the widest participation possible from divergent voices (more info!), but eventually that approach outstayed its welcome here.

Oh, all the better!

Welp.. she communicated a complete indifference to etiquette, and an unwillingness to change, while she was here. Preferring to go out in a glorious bang of defiance, than to give an inch...

So my guess is, whatever she's doing over there right now -- you only have more of that to look forward to in the future.

Hooray! That sounds like fun...

She almost seems to take a strange sort of pride in being stubbornly antagonistic, as if not being able to have a constructive dialogue with someone is something of which to be proud. I love debates and disagreements and differing views, I breathe that in like air, but there's no reason to not do so respectfully, and doing otherwise truthfully only stifles the flow of communication. If you want a fruitful exchange of ideas, it helps to not make your conversational partner shut down and close themselves off to you. You aren't going to get through to anyone by flinging vitriol and childish insults. That's just me off on a tangent and prattling though, so pardon that, it's just something I've been noticing a lot of.

If she didn't change after thousands of posts here, I'd be surprised to see her do so any time soon.

Yeah, gratz -- you have pretty much captured it right there.

It sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Yeah true, and because she always seemed to shutdown, frustrate and sometimes randomly unleash a torrent of insults on the person she disagrees with...I did not even know where she stood on these topics, all I was able to conclude was she disagrees with this particular person

I quit INTPforum angrily several months ago, after the election. Turns out you can't actually delete an account. I was prepared to ignore INTPf forever, but the recent conviction of Allen Scarsella shooting BLM protesters in MN, caused me to come back to finish an old thread. A case of "I told you so". My return less than 24 hours ago did have an unintended net positive effect on the forum. It made a temp ban on a certain poster permanent, although that may have happened eventually anyways. I'm glad I was able to precipitate it sooner rather than later, just by showing up and talking about reality.

Why did I quit angrily, calling various people out several months ago? I had spent way too much time going "ten rounds" with proponents of the alt-right. That was 2/3rds of why I left.

Sinny's never ending conspiracy theories were also terribly frustrating to me. I identify as a Scientific Skeptic, i.e. Sinny is my opposite number in that regard. Also she is by no stretch of the imagination INTP. Diversity is one thing, but when someone is using their basic impulses to annoy the heck out of me and seemingly others, that's another. I would say she's 1/3 of why I left.

I liked her as a person in a number of ways, but I also saw that she "got into it" with a number of other forum participants. Collectively, they probably had a right to remove her many times. Because I see good in her, unlike maybe other people who got into it more, I had hoped that she might soften or change what she does in some way. But I think she is too deeply bitten by conspiracies to behave rationally in that regard. I think she's "on a mission" and doesn't care how annoying it is to anyone else.

In my personal life, my track record for "ameliorating or changing the ways of" a deeply bitten conspiracy theorist, is wholly negative. I've lost a few friends. I've learned from bitter experience that you cannot deal with such people rationally, that no amount of argument or debate will help them. They will resent you for telling them the truth about their lives, and then they will pick at you. There are deep emotional phobias driving their behavior. Although there may be someone or some group effort that could make headway with such a person's problems, such as when rescuing a cult member from cult induced phobias, it takes a lot of hand holding to get done. For a long time. I don't have enough in me, myself, to be that warm fuzzy supportive person. Simply put I'm a 'T', not a 'F'.

So, learning that the social experiment of removing Sinny was performed, I am surprised, but not shocked. I usually feel sorry when things end that way. Very few people are truly "irredeemable" (although that does happen, as I've also helped prove in one case). But many people are going to have their problems for a long enough time, that it isn't a community's burden to bear them anymore. Change does have to come from within, and a fair number of people are at a point in their life where, they ain't changin'.

It doesn't look like that's actually working so well.

That's disappointing. I don't know at what point a site resorts to law enforcement, and there are of course jurisdictions where it cannot possibly be effective. Meanwhile, I've been loathe to say it in the vast majority of cases over the years, but there is received internet wisdom on this. "Don't feed the trolls."

The endgame of a community that won't stamp out vipers in its midst, is dysfunction. Proven to me at a couple of Rainbow Gatherings once upon a time.

I guess if you don't believe there's any such thing as an internet forum turning into a cesspool of hostility, you'd be perfectly happy on 4chan and similar venues. Other communities do have standards of behavior.
