No overly specific hypotheticals allowed dummies!

Provide your own, or answer others. Or you know, both. Try to answer as truthfully as possible, what you would actually do, not what you think you or others should do.

It's late at night, you're driving along an uninhabited road, you can see clearly in every direction. You come across a red-light. It stays red long enough for you to get impatient, do you run it?

I do not and I have been in the situation many times.

You just got engaged to the man/woman of your dreams. You notice that as soon as you proposed, they starts visibly flirting with a lot of people of your gender - even in your presence. They have not done this before. What do you do?

I'd run the light. I'm not even sure I'd wait long enough to get impatient. Waiting is pointless if you know running it is harmless and you're not going to get caught.

Re: QT - flirting
I'd talk to them about it, at the very least to find out what's up. Depending on how they see it, I might take issue. If they're the XXXX of my dreams though I'd probably be fairly secure.

You fall in love with someone and get married. Turns out they're your long lost sibling. You an incestor now! What do?

Already married, what a hassle, I'll just get a vasectomy.

You get a letter in the mail that wasn't addressed to you, it's a contract to kill someone and a cheque to be cashed after the job is done, what do you do?

I anonymously put a sticky note to the mail with the text "sent to wrong address" and then send it back to the nearest mail.

Here's an average research ethics question:

You're working on a potential breakthrough that can alleviate social anxiety with the use of social therapy. You have 100 students that provided social interaction data that can prove your case. One student, due to academic and career concerns, want their data destroyed. However, destroying that data will also destroy the validity of your current study. Will you destroy the data or find a way to keep it?

I'd destroy it, but I'd be pretty damn sure that it wouldn't destroy the validity of my study - or if it did, it would be because my proof was kinda tenuous and therefore not really that valuable.

Also, in order to clear ethics, you generally need for people to be able to remove themselves from the study. So if they signed a waver to that kinda thing yeah, maybe keep it? But this is something I'd do by the book.

Edit: rb said it was a train station, not an ATM. so I erased my answer

(if I was your girlfriend is just music and not a video)
do you listen to the music because it is not a video or do you say you do whatever not to listen to music because of reasons? very tricky ethical dilemma. quote, quote.

Obviously try to give it back.

Some guy loses a bunch of money to you in a poker game at a casino because he misunderstood a rule. Do you keep the money?

Fuck yeah, I keep the money.

You mother just bought you a car for your birthday. 2 days later, you find out they have to foreclose their house. What do you do?

@Serac
I keep it. Poker is cut-throat, and I'd expect to lose the money if I made the mistake.

@QT
I yell at them for being idiots, give back car.

@RB
I chase them down. If I didn't see who it was I take it inside to the bank, I use the ATM and then head inside and tell them to give it to whoever was before me on the record.

Your friend turns up with unsightly facial hair and is acting all big. There's a possibility your subjective perception of their facial hair does not represent public opinion. Do you tell them you don't like their new look?

Depends how good of friends we are. If they are just an acquaintance, I probably keep it to myself. If they are my bestie, I tell them.

A person you are really into has said they just want to be friends. They are drunk and coming on to you hard. What do you do?

I've had this happen, chased them down, regretted it.
You just can't win in that situation.

This is a conundrum for me, I've been drunk many times heck I've even been literally blind drunk but I've never been stupid drunk so I have little sympathy for people who use being drunk as an excuse, as if it wasn't them that made the decision to do whatever stupid thing they did. So I'm inclined to consider this valid consent but I'd rather err on the side of caution, it's just not worth the risk, also drunk people have a tendency to throw up if they're being physically active and I want neither me nor my bed spewed on.

You get a call from the hospital, they desperately need a blood donor to save the life of a drunk driver (my father is blood type O and this used to happen to him a lot) but you have a very important work presentation tomorrow morning and it's literally the middle of the night, do you go in or tell them you're unavailable?

Not worth it. I'm a very patient driver in general. It's not like I would cure cancer those 5 minutes waiting, I'd be shitposting somewhere

You just got engaged to the man/woman of your dreams. You notice that as soon as you proposed, they starts visibly flirting with a lot of people of your gender - even in your presence. They have not done this before. What do you do?

Talk to them.

Depends. I wouldn't risk my career for it, but I don't mind tampering if I can get away with it and know it the results are sound. In general, risking a lot for a single study seems kinda dumb. There has to be a lot of important stuff involved for me to risk my credibility and options to help people in the future

Some guy loses a bunch of money to you in a poker game at a casino because he misunderstood a rule. Do you keep the money?

Depends on whether I need the money. The poorer I am, the less moral I allow myself to be. Though, even in tight situations I'd probably talk if I consider the other person a decent and good one.

If I'm rich i don't give a shit and confess unless the person in question is a real shitbag. And yeah, I judge people and treat people I consider shitty worse.

You mother just bought you a car for your birthday. 2 days later, you find out they have to foreclose their house. What do you do?

I don't take money from my parents because they don't have any. So yeah, unless my parents were shit I don't take money or expensive gifts from them. If they were abusive I'd not care

A person you are really into has said they just want to be friends. They are drunk and coming on to you hard. What do you do?

Depends on the person. Drunk actions doesn't tell you that much, other than what they were thinking and feeling when they got drunk.

I've had this happen, chased them down, regretted it.
You just can't win in that situation.

Being drunk and self destructive is one thing, being a drunk driver is very different. In my culture being a drunk driver is a big no no. When driving drunk you are risking the life of another. So either the person is stupid or doesn't care, which means he/ she might be on a path where s/he is risking the lives of others. I wouldn't feel obligated to save that life. But, I think I might donate blood still, because it doesn't require much of me and it might save someone. Difficult to say. Am I helping a drunk driver to kill someone else next time, or am I helping someone to have a second chance. I def value a human life more than a presentation. But I don't value a person's opportunity to drunk drive over another person more than my presentation.

You have a friend who is dying. He might live hopefully and happily another 2 years if everyone around him tell him he will live for another 40 years. But you know he is dying. Do you tell him the truth or do you let his sudden dying moment come unexpectedly while living a life of contentedness. His illness makes him die in 3 minutes, so the choice is between anticipating death and anxiety for years or thinking he will live forever but suffer for 3 minutes when he dies

It doesn't matter either way, I'd probably not tell him (even though if this was about me I'd want to be told) because I want him alive for my own selfish reasons, he is my friend after all and out of +7 billion people that's quite the pedigree.

Your boss is diabetic and a complete asshole, is it immoral to occasionally bring a box of really sugary donuts to work to share with your colleagues? You don't know whether or not your boss is going to risk making his diabetes worse by eating the donuts but by sharing them with your colleagues he's implicitly welcome to partake of them.

Depends. If I think adhering to certain principles/ morals will benefit society/ the population/ work place whatever, I don't necessarily go against them. As an individual, I don't think me being an ass toward a shitty person will matter that much on a grander scale, so yeah, sure I wouldn't mind bringing sugary donuts.

You live in a small town and come across a car accident where a person known to you, but unable to be proven and judged rapist, will die without first aid. Do you help her or let her die?

A female manager using her position to coerce a married man into having sex with her against his will is bad but not death sentence bad. A woman who beats a man into submission and derides him for being weak while raping him on the other hand would deserve to die.

The difference is in the first scenario I can imagine her feeling bad about what she did even if she doesn't regret it, whereas in the later the desire to harm someone was part of the motivation for the attack. I don't mean to imply that the rape in the first scenario was ok, it wasn't, she should suffer the full legal consequences, I'm just saying a death sentence is too much.

Honestly no because it just wouldn't occur to me as a method of fire dispersing. However I would dump a bucket of water on him if I thought he was going to reward me for it.

You are kinda sick but still really want to go somewhere. However doing so would put you in a car with your friends and possibly make them sick as well. What do you do?

Should a man pay for everything on a date, or rather should a woman let the man pay if he wants to?

The only time I have been on actual dates (ugh) it happened because the guy was one of these ESTJ finance/rugby league/private school types - brought up to woo women in the old fashioned way. It was extremely awkward and I got drunk and made a mess of my spaghetti tomato sauce WHOLE swimmer crab (NEVER ORDER WHOLE CRAB IN TOMATO SAUCE ON A FIRST DATE- you'll be too busy wrestling with this fucking crab to pay attention to what the poor guy is saying, while at the same time trying to eat it without looking like a plane crash at the very end....as you would have predicted, the swimmer crab won the attention because I do not multi-task very well - in fact, I don't multi task at all) and the date went down the toilet. Because I was drunk and flustered, I didn't even finish the crab and thought it was a terrible waste, especially since he insisted on paying.

So yes, I let him pay because there was no question - he was just that sort of guy who I think would have been offended if I did not let him. However, I would have felt much better if I had paid for myself in this case, since my love for tomato sauce crab exceeded my love for rugby finance muscles. I may be old fashioned, but if a guy asks me out and appears to be wanting to pay, I'd let him. If he doesn't show any inclination either way, I would offer to pay, but it would be a bit weird if he was the one asking me out...? Dunno, it is too confusing. I'm not an experienced dater. Play it by ear, I think.

You are in a lift with a hot woman/guy. He/she is visibly flirting with you. You desperately need to fart...like, it hurts your ass.

Do you?

I would let that fucker rip. I’d even go one step further, and instead of that social norm thing where you all stand in the lift facing the same direction, I’d stand in front of the doors and look her dead in the eye, while I serve up that gas chamber.

Okay, you’re walking on the sidewalk, you left your wallet at home and you only have a $2 coin(/note/whatever your currency is). You’re holding it as you get close to the bus stop ready to catch the next bus. You trip and it falls into a homeless persons begging cap on the ground. Do you pick it out and get on the bus, or do you suck it up and walk home?

Gas chamber, that was funny :D

I'd walk home it's only 6km and I could use the exercise.

This happened to me today, you're getting on the bus and in front of you is an older man who is quite clearly missing all the fingers on his right hand, he's got one of those two wheel carts with what appears to be a heavy load on it and the bus floor is about 30cm/12inch off the ground, do you help him or mind your own business?

Without thinking I helped him by lifting up the back of the cart, without asking, I just sort of did it while in a fugue, he was annoyed but didn't give me a hard time about it, I am now going to cringe about that for the rest of my unnaturally long life.

I'm going to answer Cognisant's because I have neither a cat nor a gf

I watch and help as soon as I can see that he's struggling. He can be annoyed all he wants, I'm not letting some old man tax himself right in front of me.

Your war buddy is covered in third-degree burns, mutilated beyond recognition, and screaming for you to end his life. Do you shoot him in the head, thus violating the Geneva Conventions, leading to a court martial and almost certainly jail time for war crimes, or do you let him suffer for the untold hours it takes him to die on his own?

Shoot him.

There's a scene in Blackhawk Down (I think) where a medic is operating on someone that's clearly not going to make it, he got shot up a lot and is bleeding out on the table. Having him screaming and crying, the medic wasting supplies and getting traumatized, squad moral falling, better to shoot the goner and focus on getting the rest out alive even if they'll hate me for it.

Do you take the last doughnut?

See you're all making mistakes, in moral conundrums or thought experiments you're not allowed to wiggle your way out of them with alternate answers like this. It's supposed to narrow down your possibilities. Gopher, there is no water at your disposal in this scenario, your only choice to put Trump out is to pee on him. It's either that or letting him burn. Peeing on him is essential to the conundrum because it's not nice to pee on someone, generally. Although it's better than letting them burn. Though Cog is quite funny to have subverted it like this because peeing on someone is obviously better than letting them burn, but there is a kind of twisted pleasure in both seeing as it's Trump, so it's like satanically inverted. He's also probably not gonna reward you because you're probably responsible in some way for setting him on fire as you're the only person in the room with him so it's Trump's intrinsic worth and that's it. No extrinsic reward through money or whatever.

I would pee on Trump but not enough to put fire out.

K I'm really rambling it's late. Trump has a thing with pee anyway I suppose.

I would end it for them without a doubt. I hate seeing people suffer, and would rather go to jail, knowing that I have respected their wish. I wouldn't care about the judgements of the rest of the system in this case, because I'd know I'd done what was right in that context.

Edited because forgot conundrum:

You are accidentally given access to a database that has sensitive information about the government in your country. The revelation of this information would probably result in the deportation of your family and friends, but would also prevent the outbreak of war between your country and a powerful enemy. What do you do?

Every single time.

Park in disabled parking area in an emergency?

There's almost always multiple unused handicapped spots... so yeah wouldn't even need to be an emergency, unless it's a hospital or something.

You have a magic serum that can be used to restore a beloved elderly pet to youth and match it's lifespan to yours (or even resurrect a dead pet), or you can use it to save the life of some random adult human you've never met or will interact with in the future.

Ill choose the human. I try to keep our family's dogs' lives as comfortable as possible so they dont need extra years to fulfill themselves.

I was bored.

-------------------

It's late at night, you're driving along an uninhabited road, you can see clearly in every direction. You come across a red-light. It stays red long enough for you to get impatient, do you run it?

I am not even sure why this is a question.

I'm so gone.

You fall in love with someone and get married. Turns out they're your long lost sibling. You an incestor now! What do?

Hmmm. My parents suck for never telling me.

I don't know what the legal reality is. From a personal reality... they were never my sibling, we grew up completely apart. So there were no sibling relationships established. If both of us are happy, screw the world. (And I guess, screw each other.)

If the data can be anonymized, go for that to give them whatever I can. Otherwise, I would have made sure up front that the students knew exactly what they were agreeing to, so that their participation in the data was accepted up front. No take-backs, it was their choice.

you notice someone drops money leaving an ATM, do you take it or do you chase them down to give it back?

It depends on how much it was, and how easy they are to catch up with. If I see someone drop it and they're right there, I give it to them ASAP. If I just see a $20 on the ground with no idea whose it is, I just keep it. If it was $500, I'd turn it in.

Some guy loses a bunch of money to you in a poker game at a casino because he misunderstood a rule. Do you keep the money?

..eeehhh.... Dunno. It depends on the specific situation, what the rules are, who else is playing, the impact on the game proceeding, what the group mandates, etc. I definitely would feel a pull to give them money back (I'm human), but at the same time there's a lot of variables in the mix and I also expect other people to be responsible for their own understanding BEFOREHAND as they expect me to be.

"That poker thing happened to me once. I did keep the money but it felt dirty as hell." Yeah. I empathize.

You get a call from the hospital, they desperately need a blood donor to save the life of a drunk driver (my father is blood type O and this used to happen to him a lot) but you have a very important work presentation tomorrow morning and it's literally the middle of the night, do you go in or tell them you're unavailable?

I guess it would be more of "Do you have anyone else who can do it?" and if not, then I would do it, then make some casual remark to preface the work presentation (or work it in as example) so people would know why I was off my game, if I was. Or hey, just do a lot of coke to get through the morning. :D I consider someone's life more important than my presentation but I'd be frustrated on some level.

It's a moot point for me. Because I have allergies (regular stuff) and take regular sinus meds, they have regularly refused my blood.

I would probably not tell him and thus carry that burden of untruth for his sake, so that he could live an extra two years for his own sake. (And it is a burden -- I would not like withholding information like that.)

It's not immoral (immoral? Really??) if the bulk of the group can eat the donuts. It might be nice if you found a snack on occasion, though, that he could partake in. Face it, no matter what you buy, someone will probably have an issue with something... so it's up to folks to enjoy what's enjoyable and meanwhile take care of their own needs.

Trump is on fire, would you piss on him to save his life?

My bladder is simply not big enough to put out that dumpster fire.

Should a man pay for everything on a date, or rather should a woman let the man pay if he wants to?

Who pays depends on what we agreed to. If he tells me HE is taking ME out, then I think I expect him to pay. If he says, "Hey, want to catch a pizza and a movie?" I'm open to paying my own way. If we become a thing, maybe we'll trade off. If it makes him feel good to pay for me, then I'll let him pay. If I want to pay for him at some point, he should let me pay. It's less about who pays and how you read each other and the expectations that come along with paying.

You are in a lift with a hot woman/guy. He/she is visibly flirting with you. You desperately need to fart...like, it hurts your ass.

I am a stealth farter, so it's less about sound and more about whether I think it's ripe or not, since I have no one to pin it on. HOWEVER, if it's someone I know who will think it's funny and not hold it against me, I might just go for it.

Am I actually going to score in the lift? It's been so long... it's hard to work that into the answer.

It depends on how far away I live. If it is reasonably walkable, I'd probably walk.

I help him. of course, especially, if he looks like he's struggling.

Your bf/ gf is allergic to your cat, do you get rid of your cat?

I probably would not be dating someone who is allergic to my cat to the degree I would have to get rid of it. it's like smoking, I'd probably not pursue someone who smokes to start with because I have respiratory problems. [hey, there's the opposite question -- "do you dump your girlfriend if she can't handle you smoking?"]

I guess if it was one of those "my god I so love this guy" things and he really could not tolerate my cat, though, (so I was already deep in), then I'd try to find a loving home for my cat.

Does it actually violate the Geneva Convention to shoot your buddy in the head if he's going to die and is begging for relief? I don't know the laws. Are we in a hospital room or out on the field of battle? Because there you can just shoot him in the head and claim he got shot, I guess. I mean, come on. Or just smother him to death or something. Don't ask me.

There has to be SOME kind of more reasonable "situation" where you can off him, rather than this scenario. He should have his suffering ended.

Park in disabled parking area in an emergency?

Depends on the emergency, and are you REALLY saying I can't find an equitable place that isn't in a disabled spot close by? Even if I just get in trouble for some other reason for my parking job?

Sorry, I have a disabled friend who constantly complains about the asshats taking the disabled spots. She has a point that I am now very sensitive to.

You are accidentally given access to a database that has sensitive information about the government in your country. The revelation of this information would probably result in the deportation of your family and friends, but would also prevent the outbreak of war between your country and a powerful enemy. What do you do?

I would try to find alternate ways to release the information if it protects the people I care about. If not, I would give my loved ones time to prepare before releasing the information, or try to find a way where I only take the blame. In the end, I would have to release it.

You have a magic serum that can be used to restore a beloved elderly pet to youth and match it's lifespan to yours (or even resurrect a dead pet), or you can use it to save the life of some random adult human you've never met or will interact with in the future.

Human.

You're casually playing a MTG/Yugioh game with a 10 yo boy. Do you play nice to enjoy the game with him or do you crush him to let him learn about competitiveness of the game?

Oh jeez. I crushed my eldest kid at checkers all the time when he was five. Over time, I decided this was bad and I needed to give him some flex, to encourage him to keep trying... which made a marked improvement in his game. (and, uh, guess what? Even at age six, he almost then beat me once or twice... so... it's not like I had to hold back as much as I thought.)

Anyway, it depends why you are playing and whether you care if the boy sticks with it and what you know about him (i.e., will whomping him discourage him or will it spur him to try harder?) I know that says something about me, since it's not really about what thrill I get from winning but about the impact on the other person, which is what I am more concerned with.

If it's a peer, though, all gloves are off.

Someone asks you to tell them what you really think of them. You have lots of issues with them but were actively avoiding broaching the topic. Do you tell them exactly what you think or do you hold back for some reason?

Yes. It is against the Geneva Conventions to kill a wounded soldier.

It was meant to be a heat-of-the-moment sort of thing. I realize that it's hard to foresee how one would react in such an extreme situation, but assume that it's a split-second decision with witnesses around and no time to plan the perfect crime.

Thanks. Maybe the rule is meant to prohibit atrocity, but this scenario to me is the opposite atrocity.

I'm not sure what I would do, but I would like to kill him; and if one of the other witnesses were to do so, I would testify that I thought my friend had died in the initial attack and wasn't aware of what caused his actual death.

I would respond differently to a different scenario -- like if the guy was mortally wounded but begging to be given a chance to live, for example, and we just ditched him or killed him anyway.

edit:
My limited experience with this... we had outdoor cats and when I was in high school, I realized one of the kittens in the litter had necrosis and had maggots crawling in and out of some of its extremities. I couldn't let him live suffering like that, he kept crying all the time. I didn't tell anyone about it. I couldn't bear to do something quick and bloody so I drowned him in a bucket (although now I wish I could have handled something a lot faster). It was one of the worst experiences of my life, although I went through with it. I still think it was better for him, versus letting him suffer. I dunno. I know that's just a cat, not a person, and it didn't even understand what was happening to it except for the pain of what he was suffering.
