These are the reasons that I get from people who tell me to smoke weed. I am sure some of you do it, not like I care, but I do end up caring is when I am being pressured to by people.

I think the brain is capable of doing the listed without having to take drugs.

But I would like to know why you smoke weed. Just curious.

Why does the brain have cannabinoid receptors?

endogenic cannabinoids.

these compounds are called "cannabinoids" because the plant compounds were discovered first, not because the human body is symbiotic with cannabis or because cannabis is a natural food or medicine for us.

there might be some evolutionary link, though. would be foolishly "realistic" to dismiss the possibility.

So you are saying we give the title "cannabinoid receptors" to the part of our brain because we named the compound in the plant Cannabinoid and saw that our brain reacts to it.

I never smoke by myself, although that would probably be ideal if I was to do it at all.

I mostly smoke because everyone I hang out with does. I did a bad job of choosing a friend group when I first got to this school, and have been too apathetic to find a new one.

Sure it's relaxing but it also makes me retarded and more socially incompetent than I already am. Also usually ruins my productivity for the rest of the day. IMO there are better ways to relax without all of these drawbacks.

yeah but that's just the name and history of discovery.

the brain itself probably has the receptors because of endogenous cannabinoid neurotransmitters rather than plant cannabinoids. there's no evidence that it's natural and healthy to get stoned, though it is an intriguing thought.

I find smoking in the day to be unproductive, especially if you're with someone else. I actually just did it yesterday and I regretted the decision because my friend just wanted to go eat and then sleep, whereas I wanted to either sit and discuss or go out and do something. Eating or sleeping seem like such a waste of time!

Smoking at night with someone else who enjoys discussion and thinking is probably the best option. You get your high, you talk and think vividly, then you get tired and sleep better.

Yeah, gotta find good people to talk with. Or go for a walk with your phone out to take notes on your thoughts.

Why didn't you just say no? It just doesn't make sense to me that you would repeatedly do something that you don't particularly like just because you're friends are.

I'm not against it in principle. And I have enjoyed smoking in the past, a lot in fact. This is more of a recent development.

Cannabis is a good thing. It helps all different sorts of people with all different sorts of problems. Not being stoned is one of those problems, but smoking or otherwise using weed have tons of other applications aswell. Curing cancer for example.

I quit smoking cigarettes after 8 years (this was 2 yrs ago) smart.

I quit smoking weed for one year (Jan 2006-Jan 2007) dumb.

Won't be doing that again.

I light up every single morning (usually before 6 am) without fail. Without fail.

Edit: oh, I didn't answer the question? Why do I smoke weed? Must be because I'm hopelessly addicted to drugs.

Weed is prefered alone. It makes me more truly INTP, in a much happier way. I lay down, thinking, coming up with the craziest ideas. I implement them, figure out what the effect would do if i were to try it. I listen to music, hear things i've never heard before, even tho i've listened to this song a dozen times. I'm dancing, smiling. I can think about things that would make me sad and uneasy, in a completely neutral, objective almost content mood. You have feelings and thoughts but it all feels good and natural.

And eventually, you wander off to sleep. You wake up pretty much without hangover and go about your day.

I think that you're much more focussed into one narrow field at a time. You can't spread your tasks at all, you can't multitask. Answering questions, making sentences can get difficult as you're thinking them through. You get distracted on crazy things. You don't want to go in heavy sensory environments, social activities as they'll force you to keep alert. And while this is easily possible, it does ruin quite the potential effect.

However, if you're alone and you let your mind go wherever it pleases, then you'll go along crazy heights. I'm hoping they'll completely legalise it soon.
It does have a few sad effects, some that can be prevented. Smoking is bad, period. (pipes bongs joints spliffs whatever.) Vaping is much better. Eating / drinking is fine ,but harder to dose and diffrent effects.
There's also the scientifically proven fact that chronic weed use associates with an increased chance on psychosis of the mind. It very slowly drives 'ya crazy.

Weed has its uses for some.

The first time I tried it was when I went to Amsterdam with a group of people I had never met in real life. The first time I saw them was at the airport ^^

Turns out they were all hardcore users and there was me having never tried the stuff before. I took the same amounts they were smoking whilst eating a lot of space cake too. I was going to bed and waking up still stoned and basically out of the 4 day holiday, I was high for at least 3.5 days. During that time, I heard a piece of music that in my mind seemed unbelievably awesome but I've never found it since. I have concluded that it never truly existed.

Paranoia started to kick in around day two along with aural and visual hallucinations, but not to the point where it was freaking me out (although there was one incident, but meh...).

I can see the appeal of it as a short term experience. I would hate to do it long term as I fear it would destroy me as a person.

I would be lost to a world more terrifying than that of a sober procrastinator's.

I usually smoke weed first because i have severe intermittent back and chest pains, and second because i love getting high. Still though, there's nothing better than a shot of absinthe and a nice tight j to call it a day.

I sometimes smoke it. Mostly I use it in conjunction with another high. I hate when people offer you a hit and they are appalled that you declined. Like it's a form of treason to refuse one puff. I don't get that. It's pretty rude and inconsiderate.

I usually do that but more in a joking manner, can't be serious since i will usually say no to a bowl or two every now and then too. Though usually i'll still take one or two hits to chill just enough to relax but you're only just on the verge of buzzing. That's a nice place to be when you need to relax but still have things to do, or if you need to study but have anxiety. God didn't realize how many things i use weed for XD

Yeah, I am the same way, except I do smoke alone (better than smoking with others by a fucking margin), then you can properly self-reflect.

Does it make you retarded in a social context?

I find it's a very utile herb for Fi insight, and boosts Ne.

What I'd like to do is stop smoking with others, and smoke alone, perhaps once a week, to widen perception - but when your group of friends are smokers.. Meh. Yep, apathy - I agree occasional-use in this type of manner is damn un-productive and time consuming.

Oh yeah. It's as if there are pot-smoking rules or expectations.

Think people think it isn't "cool" or the norm to decline. I think its to do with social perceptions of 'coolness'.

You know they'll think you can't hack a spliff. Rookie.

Not everyone is like that, though.

It's been causing me a lot of anxiety recently. I get caught up in weird trains of thought where I can't stop obsessively thinking about how mammalian people are and how pointless everything is, and meanwhile people around me are trying to talk about stupid shit like, "Hey do you want to go out and drink tonight?" and I'm thinking, "My god man can't you people see how short and miserable life is?! What is there to drink to?!"

So yes, definitely makes me socially retarded.

I'm not sure if smoking by myself would be any better as far as the anxiety goes. Could just be the kind of weed I'm smoking I suppose.

Idk, I just feel like I'm growing out of it.

It's a funny substance haha. I've thought about its effects a fair amount.

Yeah obsessive negative thoughts I get those too (varies with changing environments). I think it's the stupid shit people talk about that you can't emphathise with, or find absolutely no importance in. I don't know if this is the case with you, but I've come to think that I drift into Fi when I puff, and Fe deteriorates and anything that is socially-related becomes a bloody task, it requires conscious effort, and generally I feel rather uncomfortable in social engagement, because I too, become socially retarded.

It's much easier and more relaxing to attempt to engage in meaningful conversation, or to express deep thought, but most people have no idea what you're on about. If someone is capable however, I feel much more at ease with meaningful (especially abstract) discussion, although sustaining it is difficult (which is stressful in itself); the boost in Ne and thus the lack of structure, and forgetting what you were even on about, is bound to get the person you were talking to, and yourself, confused, and the conversation will generally be fruitless and end in silence and confusion, followed by a clusterfuck of chaotic thought.

Otherwise, silence amongst others is perfect, minumum communication - that's liberating while stimulating and engaging with Se in any way e.g. music, trippy animations, sex, reading etc.

So, yeah, to conclude:

Imagine the clash of flying into self-awareness and being around others who demand attention in the external world. It's a Fi-Fe tug of war, and Fi is pulling much harder (this would most likely be in a situation where you aren't comfortable around the people, Fi feels exposed -> anxiety OR Fi focus being the cause of inability to socialize and this inability to effectively communicate causes stress, consequently leads to anxiety).

Or Ne is exploding, with a lack of Fe, driving you insane as your brain goes into thought overdrive and makes you feel energy deprived, and possibly anxious.

Or you just direct all your attention to Se related activities, although depending on the activity, this could lead to fatigue (especially if the activity is boring, which could lead to apathy followed by anxiety). You can't go wrong with music, though.

EDIT: Don't know how accurate any of that was, or just anxiety occurs because it stimulates negative emotions from a bad past experience of intoxication...?

I'm not sure if smoking by myself would be any better as far as the anxiety goes. Could just be the kind of weed I'm smoking I suppose.

I'm prone to anxiety smoking around others, but as explained, varies greatly.

Alone, on the other-hand, very rarely will I have a negative experience, I can't even recall one.

It would either be insightful (widened perception) or just pleasurable.

Favourite thing to do is to listen to music, close my eyes, and just let my imagination unfurl while generating vivid visual mental imagery in relation to the music.

Legalize please.

This is the best description of what I experience. I'm sure being around people I'm not totally comfortable with doesn't help the situation either, but the feeling persists even when I get away and am alone.

Side note: here's a really funny article about how much more potent weed has become.

I find this article decent, but not exactly the best.

He attempts to get extremely baked, then complains he's too baked. I'm sorry, but if you drink a bottle of vodka (which is dilluted with minimum 50% water!), you won't be capable writing an article the next couple of hours. Using more tabacco than weed is completely normal to me, and i'll go over 75% tabacco (as filthy as it is) if i'm smoking dutch weed alone.

Also, most medical strains are heavier on CBD and less THC?

Regardless, I don't think the argument holds. There's a simple solution to stronger weed... Smoke less.

This made me literally lolz.

Only difference is, I tend to do this even when I'm not high...

I especially enjoy when people sit around cross-legged. Reminds me so much of gorillas. Facial structures are also fun to compare...

I smoked once. I don't really know why I did (I had been interested in the idea for a few years though), but after I did I realized that if I were to smoke again, it would be for reasons 4 and 6 on your list. The "feel good" and "get chill" parts are also in there, but I remember when I was high my mind was in this "state" where I felt somehow that I was thinking of everything all at once, but at the same time nothing at all. I was at perfect balance with all of existence (which is something I often understand but rarely feel). It was fantastic, to say the least.

I am amazed you got to this point at your very first time. Most people's first time is rather bad, not knowing what to expect, and they tend to fall asleep or not get too high at all.

Getting to that point of complete inner peace and detachment is something i've only managed a couple of times and cannot reproduce at will. It's certainly an amazing experience, and one of the reasons I might be willing to try DMT.

Weed makes me feel like it's okay to be me !
It is okay to be you, regardless. <:

I never tried it before, but I do have some friends who did. They seemed kind of annoying when they did it (we were at one of their town house)- they hid away as if I didn't know what they were doing (probably afraid I would tell on them or something. Yeah, like that EVER happened), and they got all giggly about mainly nothing. Some of them asked me howcome I never got drunk either - like, totally, passing-out drunk, and I told them that I know where my limit is, and even when I drink, I will only do it until I get a little buzz.

Of course, then they told me to just lighten up once in a while, and stuff like that, which I also found annoying, because I really don't think that making yourself sick is something nice to do, just because others are doing it.

I can remember when I first started smoking (17 years ago (oh my, that's a long time :o)) that it used to seriously alter my perceptions of time and distance (with some funny situtations ensuing).
Now I smoke because of;
-addiction
-habit
-prevents me from remembering my dreams (my main reason).
-allows me to concentrate on one thing for long periods of time.

I HATE my dreams. I refuse to live a life where I desire my dreams more than reality.

I think the brain is capable of doing the listed without having to take drugs.

i have smoked weed for over 20 years and dont consider it a 'drug' but rather an herb. When I think of drugs I think of stuff cooked in labs that destroy your body and mind if you were to ingest them regularly over an 20 year period or give you terrible withdrawls if you tried to kick. I have taken a week off now with no ill effects except a little insomnia. And I dont look any worse for the wear like tobacco smokers or daily drinkers. Its silly to think pot helps one escape reality. I have had no such luck and I smoke the strong stuff. I would say it makes you more introspective if you're already a thoughtful person. Its not going to turn a fool into some wise sage anymore than getting drunk is going to make you write like Hemingway. I see it as an organic mild anti depressant/sleep aid with no adverse side effects. Sex is better and food tastes better. Of course these things can be enjoyed on their own, but if you increase the pleasure of them with a benign substance, why not? Whats to prove? It can also help one see ljfe from a different angle and give insights that you might not have had. I have had some silly ideas while high as well but its not as if my sober brain doesnt have dumb ideas as well. As with any intoxicant, be it caffeine, gambling or lust, lt must be managed carefully or it can become a problem. But still, this is not a problem with weed itself but wth the individual user.

What bothers me about weed is the attachment some people have to it. Like it is their identity.

I lived with people who sold it and smoked a LOT in my late teens/early 20s and always felt uncomfortable and anxious when smoking during that time. However I got into it on my own when I was 23 for about 6 months and found that when I smoked alone and worked on things it alleviated anxiety and helped me get into the flow of a project. I don't smoke currently but for me personally I do not understand why people enjoy smoking as a social activity. I just want to be left alone with my own head when I'm high.

Sounds like it really was part of their identity, if they were that immersed in it. Why wouldnt they come off that way?

Like I said, it has little to do with the actual herb and more with the person ingesting it.
People can become fanatical zealots with just about anything.
However, i do agree with you, that it seems odd when people use it like a social lubricant, when for me it has just the opposite effect, but that might just be due to different personality types, or the strains being ingested.

I'm prone to anxiety smoking around others, but as explained, varies greatly.

Alone, on the other-hand, very rarely will I have a negative experience, I can't even recall one.

It would either be insightful (widened perception) or just pleasurable.

Favourite thing to do is to listen to music, close my eyes, and just let my imagination unfurl while generating vivid visual mental imagery in relation to the music.

Legalize please.

Yes. This is good.

i have smoked weed for over 20 years and dont consider it a 'drug' but rather an herb.

Pretty much sums up my experience as well. I haven't gotten high in 8 months. I really don't think it effects me that much.

I don't like smoking socially which is why I quit smoking it. The exception for me is if I am with someone I really trust or click with and we can talk about really deep subjects. I know my friends and if I get high they're going to want to smoke with me. But man, when I am by myself and I am high its freaking great; it brings out the best in me. I get so many possibilities going through my head and I just start doing stuff. I've really only smoked schwag once or twice - I have been lucky. Even when I was introduced to weed it was all bomb stuff. I don't really like getting so baked that I cant even think strait though. Just a bit a t a time.

Seeing as you have not tried it, I highly doubt you know how a high mind works. It's also pointless to judge it squarely on your peers' opinions. You have to first make it your decision, because it seems like you have more of a problem with them telling you to do it rather then the act itself. I could be wrong about that though.

I can't think of a reason for why you shouldn't try it. At worst you figure out what all the fuss is about and have a reason to accept or deny it the next time.

Plus I am rather proud about my short-term working memory and would like to preserve it .

Did not like it - I have pretty much always preffered Alcohol as my "drug of choice" :bashful:

Well at least I have confirmed to myself that it is not for me...

I don't like it that much but despite that I always get sucked back into it. Trying to quit is only hard for the first 1 or 2 days, then after that the habit starts to dissipate and you find you don't need it. It is nice to smoke casually, for the way it relaxes your body and calms the mind. It does have its uses but I wouldn't abuse it. It makes you want to play videogames all day. It doesn't just do one thing. It does what it does and also what it doesn't. It's a multipurpose tool that you have to know when to use or not, it's not really like an updated atomic cigarette. It should be good for PTSD or other symptoms that won't go away and that other remedies don't affect. It stimulates hunger but can also suppress it temporarily. I just don't like how heavy smoking or abuse just makes me tired and fall asleep. I don't like sedatives too much, or stimulants really. So it's a medicine. A little ritualistic use done properly could do anything some good.

The evolutionary link is that it's actually a defense mechanism of the plant in question. Loads of creatures have cannabbinoid receptors. It's just for some reason humans really enjoy feeling weird and confused.

"The endocannabinoid system exerts an important neuromodulatory role in mammals. Knockout mice lacking cannabinoid (CB) receptors exhibit significant morbidity. The endocannabinoid system also appears to be phylogenetically ancient--it occurs in mammals, birds, amphibians, fish, sea urchins, leeches, mussels, and even the most primitive animal with a nerve network, the Hydra. The presence of CB receptors, however, has not been examined in terrestrial invertebrates (or any member of the Ecdysozoa). Surprisingly, we found no specific binding of the synthetic CB ligands [(3)H]CP55,940 and [(3)H]SR141716A in a panel of insects: Apis mellifera, Drosophila melanogaster, Gerris marginatus, Spodoptera frugiperda, and Zophobas atratus."

From : https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11447587

"Theory 1 suggests that it (thc) serves to protect the leaves from UV exposure, which can cause DNA damage. THC has been shown to be a very effective UV blocker. Theory 2 suggests that functions more like an antibiotic. In the lab, experiments show that THC can have antibacterial effects. Theory 3 is interesting because it suggests that, in fact, the THC is there to produce intoxication...just not of humans. Plant-eating animals, including insects, could be susceptible to THC's mind-altering effects too. This acts as a deterrent for further consumption, because, supposedly, the animals either do not enjoy these effects or are simply rendered too forgetful to remember where that particular plant is. "

And I'm answering bronto who is no longer present but whatever, I find this topic interesting.

There's no reason to automatically assume any thing means it's a defense mechanism or predator/insect repellent. The endocannabinoid system is modeled after chemicals and neurotransmitters related to mood and elation like euphoria as well as memory, such as anandamide, an endogenous cannabinoid. Anandamide is also found in chocolate and cacao for instance, which has its own system for regulating mood or health. The CB receptors are for those, cannabis just happens to contain constituents similar to them, allowing the organism to feel effects. It's like caffeine, except different.

Evolutionary theory postulates that everything produced by a given organism including secreted chemicals are usually useful to the organism in question for survival in some way, that's all.
