Okay.. I have been wondering whether I am an INTP or not. Ive considered ISTP but I am not very well fine tuned with what is going around with me and often drifting somewhere far.
I enjoy RnB, HipHop, Electro, House and when I am on linux, ambience. Specifically Groove Salad.
I find difficulty getting ambience so the only artist I could name is Telepopmusik.
For RnB, I enjoy The-Dream, Usher, Ne-Yo, Alicia Keys.. all that sorta stuff.
HipHop is still rather limited, mostly Tupac and Kanye West.
House and Electro goes from Bloody Beetroots to Chuckie and LMFAO. DJ Neoteric, Mick Boogie.
Sometimes I am in the mood for Erik Satie.
I fit the description of an INTP albeit some ISTP daredevilness. But I am not very good at all in sports or any sort of pace eye hand coordination. Ive scraped my car multiple times in the parking lot.
The question is.. how come everyone here listens to music that I've never heard of? Except Jimi Hendrix- all along the watchtower? I have had a little thing for rock but I dont listen to it normally. I even listen to Reggae! Bob Marley only but still!
Am I in the wrong place?

Well, I listen to music that suits how I feel, apparently most people here listen to different music.
They feel different?

...yeaaaaaaaah.
you can't expect the same sounds to resonate with everybody.
regardless of personality type, everybody here has different experiences, different emotions, different situations, different upbringing, different eardrums, different brain chemistry, etc., all of which can potentially influence musical taste.
sooo.
yeah.

I disagree.
Perhaps complex music are usually attractive to INTP's but the "weight" of this, I believe, isn't enough to reason your type or anyones' else's.

hrmmm guess so but in terms of the instruments used I've noticed most are attracted to natural sounds such as guitars and vocals. Maybe it's the environment. Having been raised in a chaotic busy city.
I suppose most here are raised in a much different environment?

...a small underdeveloped, poor, humid temp, village. But we travel quite a lot. "Nostalgia" is my favorite flavor in music. Si, they say. Tis why I'm fond of videogame music. Switched from all > alternative > metal > rap metal > instrumental > to All again.

I do not think this is a pointless thread, in that INTPs may have a personality specific taste in music. Primarily, because it seems that even the youngsters on the forum are not usually monopolized by one popular genre, as many of their peers (or other MBTI types?) may be. It seems to me that we each have eclectic tastes, that span a range of different types of music, instead of being 'hooked' on just one type.

Calm down buddy, I am a House cat and an electro head too. Actually I love just above every electronic music Genre, except for some of the ridiculously cheesy ones.
We are not limited to specific genres, we are capable of liking pretty much anything.

^ What blob said. *shock!*
I couldn't listen to only one genre of music if my life depended on it.
Several have expressed their love of electronic music, I don't know where you got that thing about 'natural sounds'. There even was a thread about it...

Sorry, what I think I meant to say is that on the forum about Electronica, a lot of the music had a much brighter, peaceful, and calm mood when compared to what I listen to.
An Example:

And an RnB example:
YouTube- Alicia Keys Ft. Drake - Unthinkable
They do seem fair bit different from what I've been finding here.

There may be such a thing as an INTP approach to music, but the result says nothing about type.

yeah, that approach depends on several external factors.

If you want a young aged person's example, i'll contribute my taste in hopes of you guys finding an answer behind any possible questions being raised here.
I'm currently 18 years of age, and my taste is rather big. While the majority of teens my age prefer rap/hip hop/ pop rock, I can't stand to listen to any of that. I prefer adult alternative, or orchestral rock/ contemporary. I also love the 90's music and I will listen to various songs and types based on my mood, but that doesn't mean I would listen to one genre. I also listen to hard rock or metal at random times, or just when I feel like listening to something a bit more harder. It's rather hard to say what I like the most, seeing how I have over 3000 songs on my Ipod, which contains the best songs by hundreds of artists/bands.

I'm almost 20 and I listen to Jazz, Progressive and Alternative Rock mostly. I think INTP's generally like complex music, out of love for complex things in general. That doesn't mean there aren't any exceptions though, I have little empirical evidence to base my generalisation on anyway. Just listen to what you like :p

I'm hard pressed to find a lot of INTP's that listen to hip-hop music, and the few that I have seem to listen to just a few mainstream people (except Madoness, who helped me find Aesop Rock's "Music for Earthworms").
I enjoy underground hip-hop that has well thought out lyrics, the sort of shit that has to be listened to a few times before you even grasped everything that was said. Eyedea and Abilities is probably my favorite right now.
YouTube- Eyedea & Abilities - The Drive
It starts out with a question. How much of it is real?
The skepticism sets in, and lessens your appeal
Next, you study conspiracy, develop some theories
And become extra wary of all your previous learned material
Your tolerence for stupidity degrades
Most of your friends seem to be trapped in the maze
You narrow your associates down to the few you can stand
And even they sometimes wonder what's going on in that head of yours
You study east and western philosophy, psychology, physics
You think a lot more, and start to question existence
You wonder about your nervous system's limits
You tamper with reality maps, and then ask hallucinogenic induced
"Who am I's? What am I? Am I forever?"
All information breathes in the shallow dark hells of never
You can see where it's leading. You wish you were dreaming
If the castle crumbles no one's there to put it back together
[Chorus]
Have you ever felt yourself slippin' away?
Where all you think about's your sanity, and how it decayed?
There's no place to run, no place to hide
You can't escape from inside, and you're losing your mind
You try to think of when it started, and ask yourself why
But each thought deepens the sickness and completes the desert dry
Fear feeds the derangement of the inner eye
With nothing left you find yourself falling to madness so you...
... cry to your god, and act normal to your peers
What if God ain't hearing you? That's your only fear
Each day you think more about your psychosis
No one but you can help you, and you know this
That's the craziest part of it all
In your rational mind, you only know two things for sure
One is that your totally nuts
And the other is that you're the only one with the cure
It doesn't make sense, it's not how you imagined
You never knew it could just happen
You thought it came from stress, suicide, a near death experience
War, drug trips, low pay ,carelessness
You've heard plenty of stories about schizophrenia
But never had evidence of one who thought himself mad
You're going crazy, and desperately reachin' for reason
But the strain to stay sane's your only demon; best believe it
[Chorus]
You finally realize that you've always lived in hell
No human model or metaphor can explain how you fell
The puzzle's alive, and it changes as you try to escape it
It created time and made it appear to pass by
You don't know what you think. You don't think what you know
You're a total lunatic, and afraid it's starting to show
Where do you go when your brain is your worst enemy?
The six hundred and sixty six foot tall bridge on seventh street?
You're scared. You're scared. Why are you so scared?
There'd be no problem if you didn't care
Now you've truly formed an opinion about heaven
It starts out with a question, and this is what it ends in
Now I know you've felt yourself slip away
Now all you think about's your sanity, and how it decayed
There's no place to run. No place to hide
You can't escape the fact that you've lost your mind
You can't erase your mistakes. There's no way to rewind
The harder you look, the harder it is to find
Fear feeds the derangement of the inner eye
With nothing left you find yourself falling to madness, so you dive
so you dive (repeated)
And with each foot you fall
the voice in your head starts to sound more and more like yours
YouTube- Eyedea and Abilities - Birth of A Fish
He lives in a four by two glass box
It reminds me of my head
I wish my floor would have rocks, but it's covered with puddles instead
If I could be him, life would be great
I could erase this permanent frown
I wouldn't even be held down by my own weight
I woke up walked to the tank to hear his thoughts on yesterday
How was it? I asked
And after a tapping the glass
He looked my way, then gave me this depressed expression
Impressed, its best just to say
Besides the tides and the grey skies, it was ok!
And I said Hey mister fish, you did all that you wish
You got, nothing to complain about while hanging out in this bitch
Well he replied Well Existence is bliss, there's so much that you miss
Besides get off the trip, happiness is just a myth
I said Living in water is extremely more peaceful than
life finding minds, blinded by evil, and forced to see through
these two peep wholes.
It seems a redeemed freedom, not being limited by walls
That only mean to qualify ground for the sky when it falls
That only mean to qualify ground for the sky when it falls
That only mean to qualify ground for the sky when it falls
That only mean to qualify ground for the sky when it falls
But Mr. Fish just laughed as I went on and on and on
So I interrupted his chuckle, puting up a middle finger
And he boldly told me it's too bad I'm was such a thinker
So Arrogantly I asked How could someone think too much?
He added that insanity lingers and thoughts brought me to the brink of such
He said you live inside a head that reminds me of my glass box
And everyone's the same; all brains are contained by your reality frame
And chained, to with the rain, its trained hard not to change
And once you see what I've explained you hit the jackpot
And at that very moment it was like my eyes really opened
The air that previously surrounded me was now an ocean
Still totally invisible accept for minor pieces of debris
Then Mr. Fish pushed up to the glass and he looked just like me
My whole world spun around, I didn't understand
But I realised I was no longer a man
So I thought about what he said
And asked him what was going on
And he said, you didn't know it but you where the fish all along
He said, congratulations, you did it, you broke free
You're just a fish like the rest of humanity
Now it took me a long time to get adjusted to this tank
But now I know what I am, and so to that man I give thanks
I've always lived inside this glass box that reminds him of his head
It just goes to show ya that your minds your own monster
Realities what you make it, if you take it away
Your just a fish, like me, swimming in the powdered water
But, I think the point I'm making is basically what someone else said: it seems one trend common in INTP's is that approach to music, it's just not always the same genre.

I'm sure... the music taste does not say whomever you are.... I might be listening to different music but all my other aspects I may think of important are still the same.
My sister, as I am, is an INTP, though we really are different in music tastes and we do argue most of the time (I'm glad she moved to Scotland). She still is the best person in my family I can talk to, though we argue most of the time.
I am more towards hip hop, she is more towars rock. Even the things we like are different, but the way we come to our separate conclusions are still the same. INTP by deinition does not say you must be X or Y. It only does say that you are most problably using "n" or "q" to come to conclusions S or T or whatever the conclusion might be.

My turn to list music I like, and for reference I'm a 17 year old INTP
Genre:
Doom/Stoner: Kyuss, Electric wizard (my former name :p), The Sword (they have a doom influence). This is just music to chill to.

Electric Wizard

Prog Rock: The Mars Volta (tons of great material to keep you busy, and the reason I picked up an insrument), Hella (has Zach Hill one of my favorite drummers), King Crimson. And I guess Coheed & Cambria although they're more alternative. This is my default genre of music to listen to.
The Mars Volta
YouTube- Cygnus... Vismund Cygnus-The Mars Volta
YouTube- The Mars Volta- Day of the Baphomets pt. 1
Hella

Prog Metal: Dream Theater (I only like there latest album, the others seem a bit boring), Meshuggah (counting the time signatures makes my spine tingle!), and my favorite Between the Buried and Me! This is a great genre to mentally "digest" because of the length and complexity of their songs.
Oh and before I forget for atmospheric stuff check out Skagos (circadian black metal), and Opeth (mostly acoustic death metal prog stuff), and Protest The Hero (technical metal)

I didn't really care too much for music until I found metal. Then my interests slowly narrowed to Symphonic-Gothic Metal and Symphonic Black Metal. About a few months ago, it broadened to include Baroque (like Corelli) and I listened to bands like Paramore for a while, though I have a nagging suspicion that Paramore/Avril Lavigne will get old soon.
Then again, I was never much of a fan of art in the first place. (Thinking paintings/sculpture here.)
