What is it about asian music that makes you prefer it over other types of music?

As for the original question, any kind of "what's your favorite..." question is hard for me to answer in anything except generalities. In other words, I can describe my favorite qualities of music, but it's very hard for me to narrow it down to a few band names.

Umm...Good question. Lol. Well, there is one fact that makes me prefer asian music: I'm Asian myself. Next to that, I have to say there are 3 particular categories of music when I mean "Asian music" that I like: Chinese/Korean/Japanese.

The reason why I like Chinese music is the instrumental side. Nowadays, their music combines western and eastern musical instruments (see Jay Chou). To me, it brings music to a different level. It's a combination of classic/traditional music and the new generation(Rock/pop/hip hop/rap/etc.). To me, there's this melody where it's good to hear, and sometimes it makes me reminiscence, while the more western melody (bass, guitar, techno beat) wakes the other half of myself. (I don't really know how to explain this, but it's a nice sensation somewhere inside.)

As for Korean music, I like it because of the vocalization. The Korean language has a soft tonality, and it's nice to hear, really. They do a lot of a cappella as well. Also, they include a lot of entertainment in their shows: dancing, singing, acting. The Korean Entertainment has evolved a lot. Like you can begin to see in America, there are more stars/celebrities that are getting into more than just one side of the industry, i.e. they used to be only actors/actresses, singers or dancers. But now, you can see singers going into acting (e.g. Alicia Keys, Mandy Moore), and actors/actresses getting into singing. But it has been done since a while in Korean (maybe not that long but still). (And as a partly fangirl, I love Korean music for the cute guys XD.)

As for Japanese music, I just adore its language and its culture. I love manga and anime. Technologically, they are really advanced. Also, they have this sub-category in music that is called Visual Kei. It's a kind of music that is totally apart from all the others. But I can't really describe this to you, since I'm not totally into it, it still depends. There are the more "hard" ones, and the more "soft" ones. I'm more of the soft one in Visual Kei music. (e.g. Escapism - Antic Cafe, Gackt, some songs by Miyavi, Psycho le cému, Malice Mizer...)

I see. Well, it's okay, then just describe what are your favorite qualities of music. Why do you like them? Is there any particular reason? As for the bands' names, you could just point out those you listen to as example to the kinds of music you like, maybe, so that if there's anyone interested, they can just check it out...Well, that's how I do things on forums...^^; So sometimes, I enumerate a lot.

The Misfits is my Favorite band, but i like a variety of music. Far too many types to name, I usually like either indie music or someitmes music that is more rhythmic.

Favorite solo artist is Ben Folds. I love his unique and uncluttered view of the world.

Favorite band is a hard choice. I'd have to go with Weezer or Led Zeppelin. Or Pink Floyd. They're all good, although in very different ways.

However, if I have to listen to one band for the rest of my life, I'd choose Led Zeppelin or Ben Folds (either his solo work or his work with Ben Folds Five).

Elf Power's good. . . I have a few of their songs. My favorite, though, is "Will My Feet Still Carry Me Home" off of A Dream In Sound. Great song.

And I would like to officially revise my choice of favorite solo artist from Ben Folds to Frank Sinatra. :D Change of heart.

I have to say I really like the 60's music.

My favorite band has to be The Beatles. No, I'm not on drugs, I actually can look deep enough to find a meaning to a song.

Dar Williams is currently one of the best lyricists, I think. However, there's nothing quite like Pink Floyd or Led Zepplin to while away the hours.

When I'm feeling pensive, I'll listen to Enya.

Barenaked Ladies takes the cake for me. I go with other stuff for a while, but I always return. Not much holds my attention for that long... I also like Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Jonathan Coulton, Kansas, Matchbox 20, and anything else that I like. I think I like BNL for true musicianship and their offbeat humor. And they're Canadian...

I like so many bands that I'd rather not list them all, but my current favorites are Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater, Opeth, old Metallica, Megadeth (the music transcends their stupid band name), Rush, Pure Reason Revolution, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, and Coheed and Cambria. Oh, and Rush.

I know I'm probly going to get rotten tomatos thrown at me for this but.....
What's the big deal with the Beatles?
Or Elvis?
I've listened to their songs and it's nothing special for me. Actually, 'The Beatles' song like a bristish, "softer around the edges" version of the beach boys.
And Elvis' voice annoys the heck out of me.

But really, I like all types of music basically. And serisously.....ALL types!

Ermine
29th-February-2008, 01:35 PM
^ I know what you mean. I never got why the Beatles get so much credit for shaping modern music as we know it. Sure, they're catchy, but they don't have much else. Just another pop band. Jimi Hendrix did more for music in my opinion. Anyway...

And Elvis is just strange.

I love variety. Whatever I'm listening to though has to be in tune with me if I'm not having a neutral day...... I can't get with it otherwise.

Anything that doesn't include senseless screaming of the voice and electric guitar
and
anything that doesn't include a country "twang," I can get with for the most part.

I like to hear creativity in music - a lot of different things going on behind the singer. Especially beat - it must be creative. Sound affects are nice too
(I'm thinking "Apologize" sung by ONE REPUBLIC).

14th-April-2008, 06:25 PM
There's nothing wrong with electric guitar. It's the distortion pedal than messes things up.

Ermine
14th-April-2008, 07:33 PM
just so long as there's not so much gain that it's fuzzy and you can barely hear what notes you're playing. Even for hard rock, I prefer to have a really strong and intense clean sound instead of an insubstantial gain. Maybe I just need to steal Justin Chancellor's (Tool)bass.

Cabbo Pearimo
15th-April-2008, 01:55 PM
Mmmmmmmmmnnnnn, that bass.

Tool in general. I think I've said this before, but the reason I love tool is becasue I've got these massive sound files of intense quality. Eargasm.

Utada Hikaru
Fish Leung (fish is a nickname: check google)
Yuki Kajiura
Yoko Kanno (Coincidence that 2 composers that I like share the same initials)
Enya (Just found out one of my favorite songs was made by her)
Tchaikovsky (I'm involved with a kind of cold war with my cousin about him)
Chopin (The other half of the musical war)
Frank Zappa (20th century music idol :) )
The Sundays (Strangely unknown band)
Rock which doesn't overdo angsty/ angry/ vulgar themes (This covers lots)
Lots of others whose names I can't remember

Yes, slightly divergent tastes. Still, that's me.

Uhmm so much to choose from. Aside from the classics (Pink Floyd, Hendrix, The Beatles, The Cure, etc...) I'd like to focus more on things starting late 90s and forward. My current favorites are mainly indie/rock or that trend on mixing rock and electronic (dance rock, indie dance, dance punk, electroclash or whatever they are calling it now) and anything taking influence from the "french touch" masters of house.

This first group are bands that have been in my top five for a while:

Interpol
Ladytron (very distinct sound. moody)
Muse
Rinôçérôse (great instrumentals)
Daft Punk

Other bands I currently enjoy:

Death Cab for Cutie
Death From Above 1979
IAMX
The Notwist
Plastilina Mosh (they're so... funky. And the only good band to ever have come out from my city)
Soulwax
Cut Copy
Digitalism
LCD Soundsystem
Simian Mobile Disco
MSTRKRFT (their remixes are genius)

Bright Eyes. I love that guys lyrics. He's got this one, "There is no right way or wrong way, you just have to live - So I do what I do, and at least I exist. What could mean more than this?" And it just makes me smile every time.

The Beatles are my top favorite of all time. Songs like "Two Of Us" make me feel all warm inside, while songs like "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" always make me laugh. Paul McCartney's solo stuff is wicked too, it always gives me that feeling like I'm in love - John Lennon on his own was wicked too, golly, who doesn't love "Imagine"? Great songs to sing in the car. I really like oldies.

Sublime is one of my favorite bands now, only recently discovered them. I'm not sure
why exactly I like them... I just think they're The Shit. It's the cool mix of like, reggae and rock, I guess, lyrics aren't bad either(well, excluding Caress Me Down, which is just lame).

I'm huge on Heavy Metal. Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Slayer, Metallica, AC/DC, The Misfits - Bands that rip. Whenever I feel angry, I listen to Slipknot or something and I'm like, "Holy shit. I could never be as angry as these guys, thank God!"

Elliot Smith is also a favorite, especially when I'm sad. He has such beautiful songs, but they're all so depressing, I have to be in the right mood to enjoy them.

That's something my dad doesn't get - I have to be in the right mood to listen to different artists. It irritates him I can't just stick to 'shuffle', heh.

Also, of course, Van Halen.

In reference to more modern music, my three favourite bands are (in order):

Say Anything- I love practically every song by them. Anyone else know them?
Dashboard Confessional
Relient K

I also like other music, some classical, some older music and also music from film soundtracks (particularly Lord Of The Rings.) I do like The Beatles as well. Can't think of any other specifics right now, maybe I'll come up with some later. I also have to be in a particular mood to listen to certain songs and that's part of the reason I like the three bands above, they have such a wide variety of styles in their songs and all have amazing lyrics. I love lyrics in songs, they contribute a lot to how much I like a song.

(Hi! First post!)

I love how varied everyone's tastes are. I'll be checking some of these names out later, seeing as I trust your judgements for the sole reason that we are all of the same type! :)

My music taste: constant favourites are Bright Eyes and Brand New, because I'm a sucker for lyrics too. Recently really got into Bob Dylan because I watched I'm Not There and thought he was so cool. Old music is great. Any classic rock, I love. Movie soundtracks are the best.

I love complex songs that change a lot, so I forced my whole art class to listen to classical music during our art exam. I'm always on the look out for more music, across genres. I just sort of want to hear as much of it as I can.

I didn't want to answer vaguely, but, simply put, I can enjoy any music, or at least try to.

I also like Brand New (I should have listed them in my earlier post). My favourite Brand New songs are Jude Law And A Semester Abroad and I Will Play My Game Beneath The Spinlight. I haven't listened to Bright Eyes, but I think I'll download some of their songs. Any suggestions?

i enjoy listening to just about any kind of music but i prefer something that is heavier and will give me an energized feeling such as rap or rock. i do like listening to "deep" or beautiful music late at night or when i smoke or have a subject i can sit back and contemplate.
If i had to say a favorite band the only way i could classify it between all the music i like would be to mention the band i listen to the most at this time which would be A Perfect Circle, they have deep laid back songs that still get heavy enough for me to get me jammin.

Iron & Wine (I love sam beam sooo much)
Vienna Teng
Radiohead
Andrew Bird
Death Cab for Cutie
The King's Singers (A cappella group, pretty solid)
Maroon 5 (Songs about Jane only... the other cd rather sucked)
I went through my phases of Tool, Dream Theater, and a slew of "great" really technical guitar players. I kinda grew out of them, though, because really technical music started to sound very similar after a little while. Of those Tool is definitely my favorite still.

Every once in a while I get in the mood for the Gregorians (who do monk chants of famous songs) and Psalms sung in 4 parts a cappella, which some unknown Reformed Presbyterian group puts out.

Tekton, I am glad to see you listen to bands like Digitalism, Simian Mobile Disco, MSTRKRFT, and Soulwax. They are all so great I just hope that they have some lasting power. I love that filthy Electro stuff. Oh, I just want to geek out on music right now.
Other greats include;
Elliot Smith
The Black Lips
M83
The Modern Lovers
Boys Noize
Jay Reatard
Apex Twin

Daniel Johnston
and a lot of Post-punk and late 90's indie stuff
As for the Beatles, they were one of the most important bands of the 20th century. With that said, I cant stand to listen to the Beatles. Every time I hear them, it is like hearing a commercial and I feel like I am supposed to buy something or like I am watching a really touching moment in a movie. Plus , to me, hearing them is like eating a 6 month old loaf of bread. Yeah at one point that loaf of bread was great but now I need something new.
Music makes me very very happy. :D

Favourite singer: Tarja Turunen, ex-singer of the finnish metal band Nightwish. She's a soprano and she's really a good one. Have been my favourite singer for 3 years, since I found out about this band.

Favourite band: Nightwish (the old one with Tarja). The band which introduced me to the metal scene. Before I didn't really listen to music, only on the radio in the car, but never really payed any attention to it. Now I have tastes and because of Nightwish. What I first liked about this band was Tarja's voice - a classical voice - and then later the whole style. I also like the themes of the lyrics, no "I love you baby" and that sort, these lyrics are far more better than those. Also Tuomas - the songwriter, keyboarder and the man behind Nightwish wrote about nature a lot (escaping in the nature) and of course he had to write some "love" lyrics, but of unrequited love and in more mature words and not "You don't love me, I cry" bla bla that sort of thing - I don't really know how to explain it. All well, that's it...

My favourite vocalist is probably Kelly 'Sundown' Carter. Especially on Outworld's self-titled album, his voice is molten steel. Also, an inevitable mention of Ronnie James Dio comes next. Out of female vocalists, I've never really liked any of the sopranos (though out of metal, they can be awesome), so my favourite is probably Danielle Draconis from Original Sin.
As for favourite bands/composers, I have too many to name.

Let me start be saying that I hate almost eveything that is out these days except for a few acts, but maybe im just getting old.

My Favorite music acts below

The White Stripes - Easily my favorite of all time and I just started getting into them recently ...like i said I dont really like most of todays stuff, but this is truly an awsome act. Original Sound, and not one of their songs sounds like their other songs. While I think that most truly great bands have about 20-30 solid songs. I would say the Stripes have at least 50 extraordinary songs. Also I know I just joined here but, I cant believe on an INTP forum I didnt see them mentioned once.

Led Zepplin

The Doors

Stevie Ray Vaughan

RATM

Jimi Hendrix

Bob Marley

Natalie Merchant - Has the coolest female voice. I dont know what it is but It just beeps something deep in my cerebral cortex.

Smashing Pumpkins but it all depends on my mood du jour. I followed the Grateful Dead for awhile once (a month and a half anyway) but on any given day I wanted to listen to Motorhead or some such.
Top 40 drives me nuts just on principle but most of it is whiney uncreative drivel anyway so I don't feel like I am being unfairly judgemental.

The best rapper that ever lived was 2Pac, but at the moment I'm listening to:

Jadakiss
Dipset (Cam'ron, Juelz Santana, Jim Jones, Hell Rell, J.R. Writer)
Lil Wayne
Young Jeezy

Anyone into rap music around here? Or am I the only one in this damn forum who's into it?

i'm a hip hop head, although our tastes seem to be quite different. 2Pac was good, the best at his style, but i wouldn't go so far as to say the best ever. you ever listen to any underground hip hop (Def Jux or Rhymesayers type stuff)?

That's Life--Frank Sinatra

I wonder... is there a correlation between INTP's and music?

I'm a bit of the opera-hound. I also like "easy listening" (Josh Groban, Celine Dion, Sarah Brightman, etc).

Anybody have any ideas?

Circo Abusivo: Also Roma inspired; from Italy I think

DeVotchKa: More gypsy punk

Kultur Shock: MORE gypsy punk

I'm considering majoring in Slavic Studies. Don't know if that comes through at all. :D

Circa Survive is my favorite band. I never know what to classify them as because they are so unique in their sound.. I haven't heard any band that comes close to replicating their instrumentals or the voice of Anthony Green (vocalist). They've been my favorite band for about 2 1/2 years now and I can't get tired of them. Every time I listen to one of their songs its iike an adventure in my mind because it's so complex and interesting.

Epic music indeed.

I like a lot of Three day's gace, Nickelback, Linkin Park, Green Day, Breaking Benjamin, and Three Doors down. I'd say my range of music mostly includes country, rock, metal with some other geners inbetween. I love collecting some of the songs from my favorite animes. Death Note and Full Metal Alchemist have some good ones.

I'v been using this thread to widen my range of music a little bit too. Recently I'v added rage against the machine to my library because I heard it on guitar hero. Apperently people take offense to the fact I use that game to find some good bands.

Vitamin String Quartet is amazing. I really enjoy their tributes. I especially like the U2, Paramore, Dido and The Killers tributes.

Also I love classical crossover/classical pop. Sarah Brightman, Sissel, Hayley Westenra as far as vocalists go. Vanessa Mae and Bond as far as instrumental goes.

I also love Symphonic Metal and sometimes Power Metal. Too many bands to list but mostly Nightwish, Epica, Within Temptation.

Some of the bands that I listened too today (because I don't talk much, my teachers let me keep my headset on in class, which serves two purposes
1. so I can listen to music 2. to cancel out all the stupid):

The Mars Volta, Meshuggah, Hella, The Protomen (check out their wiki page), Electric Wizard (they did doom metal right, way before The Sword came along), Sleep (another amazing Doom band check out their hour long epic Dopesmoker on youtube), Death, Opeth, Between The Buried And Me (seeing them April 17!), Mastodon (seeing them with BTBAM!), Dream Theater, Protest The Hero, Yes, King Crimson, At The Drive-In (if I ever got a band tattoo atdi would be first on the list!), Coheed & Cambria, Al Di Meola,oh and everything Wu-Tang Clan has ever put out because that's the only good hip-hop (aside from Tupac and Biggie but those are given).

Pretty much everything you won't hear on the radio... oh well simple music for simply people. It's a shame that most people will only ever experience the radio, where the music is made off of a simple formula for success with little thought behind it other than to make money. poor, poor radio zombies :segen:

My favorite band was, is and will be Iron Maiden.

I kinda like Iron Maiden but they always manage to annoy me with their songs because they'll write one kickass riff of godliness per song, and then (the annoying part) they will play said riff for six minutes straight and I'm like "*argh!!!*IF YOU WERE JUST GOING TO PLAY ONE RIFF THEN YOU COULD HAVE JUST DONE THAT IN THREE MINUTES!" A band I think you would like though would be SkeletonWitch because guitar-wise they play similar types of thrash/NWOBHM riffs except they will play their riff for 3 to 4 minutes. Oh and their vocals are awesome also its a cross between death and black metal (all of the good none of the bad)

My musical taste ranges from classic rock, indie stuff, and then over to techno. So here are some of my recent discovered cool bands.

-Dan Deacon
-The Killers
-The Strokes-along with Julian Casablancas going solo
-Black Moth Super Rainbow (Can't help but find their name amusing)

I also relate with about 80% of the bands that Himself mentioned

Does anybody else on here listen to satellite radio to find music?

Collective Soul. Totally relates with me. Anyone else?

I fucking love this band. My dad played the shit out of their self-titled album as I was growing up and I loved every single song that was on it. Not sure if I actually relate to it though, it's just one of those bands that's like...awesome. I was really happy to figure out their newest album maintained a sufficient level of awesomeness.

There's one constant throughout the years: Death Cab for Cutie.

Otherwise, I like folk, folk-punk, shoegaze, chanson francaise, metal, and so on and so forth. I'm not terribly knowledgable when it comes to genres, unfortunately. (Where does the Mars Volta fit? Progressive rock?)

Shout-out to my homeboys:
