I don't know why I didn't post this earlier. This series has so fully entranced my imagination that I readily compare it to the likes to Horatio Hornblower and Lord of the Rings. In a sense, this is a cross between the two, though aside from the dragons it borrows much more from the former.

This is so far a 5 book series by Naomi Novik set in the era of the Napoleonic Wars. The twist is that in this history, dragons exist and are thus a part of military strategy.

All you need to know is that it is engrossing, fantastically well written and will change your view on what can be done with fantasy fiction.

Novik plunks her scaly beasts into the Napoleonic Wars, as members of the Aerial Corps, air cover for the beleaguered Royal Navy as it fends off a French invasion
