anyone know if you need to know advanced chemistry to take it?

I think it depends upon where you take it and at what level. When I was younger, the local community college offered a microbiology course and the only prerequisite was having passed two semesters of college biology.

It depends on if you plan on taking some classes or getting a degree. I had to take general chemistry as a prerequisite to general biology. I imagine that as the class level increases, so does the probability of needing organic chemistry.
If you plan on microbiology as a major, it's almost definite. You'll need organic chem and biochemistry. Much of what goes on at the microscopic level involves chemistry and genetics.
