What are some secrets to getting to sleep in a timely manner? The best advice I've come across is getting adequate physical and mental stimulation during the day. However, even then I find myself tossing and turning in my bed for HOURS at a time. What do you do to turn off your motor of a mind?

Well, a decent joint can get me real sleepy sometimes.
Besides that I just read a book until I fall asleep. That usually does it for me.

It starts with closing your eyes....;p
But uhmmm
When I'm sleepless, I'm usually up to the point of exhaustion. But actually taking a hot bath helps a lot, reading a book helps some times. Listening music while going to sleep.

I just start studying a class that I find dull and I fall asleep in no time flat. The plus side is that even if this technique fails, I obtained some quality study time into a class I would not otherwise study.

The trick is to fight it 'til the end.

Good advice too. Since I'm no longer in school, I've found reading a dull book (Dickens or Hardy works well for me) to be as effective as anything. Sometimes though, your brain just will not cooperate and you are going to have to tough it out the next day.

I have 3 lights in my room. When I get ready to go to sleep I start by turning off one and then continue to do stuff at my comp or reading for 30 minutes. Then I get into bed and turn off another light. When I'm ready the last lamp goes out.
The sequential lowering of the light helps simulate a sunset for my brain. Yeah, it's a pretty crappy sunset but my brain chemicals can still get tricked.
Also: Alcohol (especially Beer- it Hops makes you sleepy) or herbal tea also help. I'm also sleepier in a post-orgasm state, so be nice to your girlfriend or your hand or your girlfriend's hand.

I see my doctor almost weekly and he always gives me a lecture about sleep.
I am told the following...
NO drugs or Alcohol (I kinda have a problem)
No tea or coffee or caffeine after lunch
Get in to bed and once comfy don't move, not even to itch
Only use your bed for sleep and sex (No chilling in it)
Oh, there was more, but it just goes in and out of my ears and I usually walk away with a prescription for Valium. Now that helps!!

Valium is a drug... and your doctor is a hypocrite :-P
And yeah, the herbal tea I drink has no caffeine.

Eat a big meal before going to bed.
Supposedly it's not healthy, but it works.

I attempt to utilize my insomnia to get basic tasks and chores accomplished, the fact that I am attempting to do something practical and useful puts me to sleep immediately! ;)
Heh, If you see no way to apply your insomnia or it is interfering with your productivity I suggest researching it on the internet, one can only assume you will find your answer.

A hard headbutt against the closest wall should work...
But, if seriously, when I really can't fall asleep, I use some aromatherapy spray which my grandmother gave me, although my sense of smell is screwed up. Then I sometimes just stare at the ceiling/wall. Or drive myself until an exhaustion.

Get a girl with a sleep spell. I think NPs may prefer sex in the morning? Or is this just as we get older?

If it's harder for us to lose consciousness, does that mean we're also harder to kill?

Get into bed and don't move. I like that feeling, when I'm all warm and cozy and everything feels really heavy and slow.
Then I fall asleep and suddenly it's morning and I don't wanna get up and everything's been ruined. Stupid sleep.

Hearing audio plays or audio books helped me a lot. Distracts me from thinking too much.

I sleep easier with the TV on in the background.

On the contrary, if TV is on, ANYWHERE perceptible to my senses, I will NEVER fall asleep unless my body is literally collapsing beneath me.

Like, when you're so close to falling asleep watching a movie late at night.........and suddenly, when youre done, and u actually go to bed... the feeling goes away. And falling asleep isnt as easy all of the sudden. It bugs me ^^

I need my senses to have as little as possible. Maybe I'm over-sensitive.
Once the TV is shut off, consciousness follows suit...

It's sad that no INTP has ever slept in the same bed as someone they love. They might sleep very well.
haha i laughed a lot when i read this.
i haven't had a problem falling asleep for several years, unless something really bad/annoying happened to me. however, i have noticed that when you fall asleep whatever you are thinking/daydreaming about will often morph into one of those pre-sleep dreams (where you are sorta asleep but not quite). i have found that if you can learn to daydream in the right way (hard to explain, but the daydream must be quite vivid and then you have to slowly let the daydream control itself, eventually coming to a point where you are experiencing teh day dream without thinking about it) then that daydream will easily shift into a pre-dream state and then a short time after that you will be sound asleep. i dont know if what i said makes sense, but the whole trick is to not think about it!

Ah yes-- some sort of noise in the background, I forgot that. I didn't use to need it, but when we moved to the country I couldn't sleep anymore unless I had the radio on. I was used to the noise of a city and the silence kept me up. I like it to be pitch dark too-- light is my arch nemesis when it comes to sleeping.
