View Full Version : Word of the Week - Start
FacetiousPersona

The idea of this thread is for people participating in it to learn an unusual but usable word each week. You may know a word at one time or another, but it is very improbable that each one will already exist in your vocabulary. Prove me wrong and I shall be very impressed with your vocabulary.
Now, this will begin on the upcoming Monday, which will be the 2nd of March, 2009. A word will be chosen and posted for all to discuss in a new thread with the appropriate number in the title to represent which week we are on from the start. For example, the first word of the week will be 'Word of the Week 1' and the second 'Word of the Week 2'. It will be advised for each person participating in this to express their opinion of the word- which should encourage their mind to memorize it.
I require everyone's assistance to be successful with this concept. You have to send me a suggestion for a word to use each week, and I shall select one from the word(s) people send me. Yes, I could search for a word each week myself, yet I wish for others to be involved.
My only hope is that people enjoy this and participate. This idea seems good, and it should contribute to our vocabulary.

Do we need to have a new thread for every word? Wouldn't it be better to just have one big thread?

I was thinking that having separate threads for each word would make it easier for people to concentrate/notice the current word. It'll be at the beginning of each thread and for everyone to view. I considered the option you suggested and thought the one I posted was more suitable for being organized in nature.

Word of the DAY would be even better
I thought of this and concluded that it was unrealistic. People do not log in each day and it'd be less easy to memorize each word. Plus, people will lose track with the frequent updates and have minimal time to reflect on new words. They would essentially become lost in all of the new words bombarding their mind.

See? You corroborated my comment with your response. Thank you.
Now, any ideas for a word, FastFashion?
I was thinking that after each thread with the word of the week has finished (week finished and next word selected to be posted), the thread should be merged with this one. They'll only be separated from this one as their own thread while active.

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/corroborated Confirm/verify/clarify.I see. I might be using that word a lot in my persuasive essay, the one I should be working on right now...but I'm not...
Now about the thread, I do think you should have a new word everyday. To all the people who don't visit the forum everyday, that sucks for them! They're missing an opportunity to learn a new word that could be useful to them when writing essays, or just trying to impress people in everyday speech. Their loss is not your fault.

I vote for one word a day also (but who said it was a democracy, right?)
If you don't visit the forum for one or two days then you just have to check two or three words. We can deal with that, can't we?
Imagine if you already knew two words of the week in a row, you'd be half a month without learning any new words! THAT, we can't deal with :p

3 times each week would be reasonble. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. I'll use Saturday to plan the next week of words or the other spare days. It could be 6 times each week, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with Sunday as my day to plan, but we would have limited time to discuss each word. We'd be moving forward very fast.

This sounds like a fun thread! Count me in, FP. I love English. I wanna learn the etymologies of all the words, too. Could we get new words every three days or so, though? It's not my fault I can't log on everyday. :( It would give time for more in-depth discussion, too, and more opinions on something can only be a good thing!

This is the reason why I did not want it to be each day. I'm planning for it to be every 3 days or 2 days.

Yeah, I'm with Dissident-- let's not let it die. I could find a word or two every week or three/four days, if anyone wants. D'you want me to start a new thread, or does someone else want to volunteer?
FF
6th-March-2009, 08:30 PM
Like I suggested earlier, we should do this everyday.
If several people, as opposed to one person, could find new words, then this could be possible.
For example, one day sagewolf would post a word and we'll discuss it...the next day I could post a word, and we'll discuss it...and the next day, whoever else wants to volunteer can post a word, and we could discuss it.
How does that idea sound?

Great! Just what I need. More words added to my vocabulary that nobody else can understand!
Actually nobody has used a word in this thread that I'm not already familiar with. :/ Let's reach a little deeper, people. How about Pietism?

SWEET LORD! Does it usually take you INTPs so long to actually start doing something? I thought you were sort of like us ENTPs (yes, I am trespassing) but more in your head and what not... no?
If you'll take enemy advice, why don't you just all post a word when you feel like it? Only one a day. If someone has posted a word, then you can wait until the next day. If people aren't interested in a new word on a given day, then no one posts. Seems easy enough. And less unnecessary (IMO) formality.
Anyway, that's just one ENTP's opinion.
Good first word: Circumlocution.
Meaning:
<img alt="" style="display: block;" width="1" height="2"> 1 : the use of an unnecessarily large number of words to express an idea
2 : evasion in speech
(seems like INTPs would like this since you all value being concise so much...)
Okay, I'll go back to where I belong now.

Nah, I think we do need a kick up the butt every now and then. (Your T is extraverted, so you get to decisions more quickly than us-- our N is extraverted, so we dither and keep gathering information. We never know enough.)
Perhaps, if FP is allowed back on the forum then doesn't get re-banned. I'm for us doing it. I'm also for starting a new thread and asking a mod (very nicely! :p) to keep an updated list of all the words in the first post. Just to keep things neat. Fastfashion's multiple user idea is a good one, so whenever a conversation dies down, somenoe bring up a new word!
You know what, in half an hour, I'll just start that thread (This one is cluttered: better to start new, you know, fewer than 40 posts into the thread) unless someone else comes up with something else. Circumlocution is a good word, but I already knew it... it's not that uncommon, is it? How about... *thinks* caliginous? (Adj. (archaic): misty; dim; obscure; dark.) I like that word.

Go to the thread about it in Announcements, in Quality Control. I'm too lazy to post a link. :p If this is the only thread where you read his posts, you might not see why, of course-- this was one of his better threads.
It wouldn't be "Word of the Week" so much as "Word of the Whenever-The-Hell-We-Feel-Like-It." And, um... why not? Why doesn't it deserve an entire thread that doesn't start with fifty posts of dithering?
@SotH: Or an air-spirit; yes, I like that word a lot too. ;) I like the meaning and I like the way it sounds.
