View Full Version : Functional Development Test

I noticed when grandpa2390 started posting that there were results from a test I remembered, but couldn't find, in his signature. I'd been keen to find that test again, since it tries to measure the development of functions as opposed to on which side of each dichotomy you fall, and fit you to a type based on functional development.
Here's the link for anyone interested (http://www.keys2cognition.com/explore.htm), and here's my results:

I delved into their definitions of what an INFP is supposed to look like and could find snippets of me there. What I find more interesting though, is the fact that I don't follow the apparent law of Dominant and Auxilliary processes switching between extrovert and introvert.
Upon further review, I also have a quibble with how they label preceiving and judging functions. I've never seen intuiting and sensing lumped into perceiving and feeling and thinking lumped into judging.

Honestly the words in a lot of the choices for these sorts of tests throw me waaay off. I know for sure that I answered differently on some of the Ni choices because they were talking about some sort of mystical experience...and although I know I've had some sort of unexplainable epiphanies over the years, I wouldn't call them mystical in any way. Same thing goes for a lot of the Fe answers...the choices were worded like, you understand the needs of other people and DO something about it. I know I definitely just...notice the needs of other people. It ends there.
Anyway, I'd like to point out HOW CLOSE my Ne/Te are, as well as Ti/Ni/Fi.

YOUR COGNITIVE PROFILE
Understanding Your Results
A profile of your cognitive development is presented below, based on how you have described yourself. A 4-letter personality type code and temperament are also presented for your convenience if you are familiar with those frameworks. Most people find their results match their 4-letter personality type code and temperament. That is, we tend to develop what we prefer and vice versa. As you reflect on your cognitive profile, keep in mind that sometimes we develop a cognitive process to meet the demands of our environment or use a process well in one area of our lives but not others.
The Eight Processes
Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung identified four mental functions — today known as cognitive processes. We focus our attention and gather information using Sensing (S) and iNtuiting (N), and we organize our experiences and make decisions using Thinking (T) and Feeling (F). Jung described how each of these four processes plays out in a person's "internal world" (I) of thoughts, feelings, memories and imagination; and in the "external world" (E) of actions, people, tools and organizations. Thus, 8 cognitive processes (Se, Si, Ne, Ni, Te, Ti, Fe, Fi).
Basic and Developed Use
Each cognitive process can be engaged in a basic, unsophisticated way reflecting our natural human capabilities. Almost everyone can engage each process in some basic way. Beyond this, you will engage some cognitive processes in a more sophisticated, developed way. This is usually the result of innate preference plus lifelong growth and practice, which equals development.
Perceiving—how we focus our attention and gather information Cognitive Process Basic (Passive) Use Developed (Active) Use extraverted Sensing (Se) Notice sensory data in the environment. Trust your instincts and take action relevant to the moment and current context. introverted Sensing (Si) Recall tangible data and experiences. Stabilize a situation by comparing it to what is expected, known and reliable. extraverted Intuiting (Ne) Notice abstract patterns as they emerge. Shift a situation's dynamics and explore imaginative potential possibilities. introverted Intuiting (Ni) Receive "ah-ha" insights and realizations. Persue a greater level of awareness to transform who you are and how you think.
Judging—how we organize our experiences and make decisions Cognitive Process Basic (Passive) Use Developed (Active) Use extraverted Thinking (Te) Follow steps, points and time tables. Create structure, reason by measures and evidence, and implement complex plans. introverted Thinking (Ti) Adhere to definitions and impersonal principles. Analyze a problem using a framework, and find an angle or leverage by which to solve it. extraverted Feeling (Fe) Honor others' needs and preferences. Connect with people by sharing values and taking on their needs as yours. introverted Feeling (Fi) Adhere to personal beliefs about what's important. Evalute situations and choose what you believe is congruent with your personal identity.
Development is more than basic or developed use of processes in isolation. Excellent use of a cognitive process involves both basic and advanced use as appropriate, and ability to deploy other processes in its service. Average to good use usually means we can use the process in limited situations or use it well but only with the aid of other processes. Poor use means basic use at most. Finally, we may get ourselves into trouble when we don't use a process at all.
Your Cognitive Development Profile
The forty-eight questions you rated earlier tap into the eight cognitive processes. Some questions tapped into basic or developed use of a process used by itself, while other questions tapped into use of multiple processes at once. The profile below is based on your responses. The number of squares indicate strength of response. The equivalent numeric is shown in parentheses along with likely level of development.

well if you read the directions, they say that you are not supposed to understand every question, as your understanding helps to determine the results. I did not understand them all the first time, but now that I am older and wiser (i guess ;) ) There may be only 2 that I do not.

yeah... well the expert guy from another forum told me that myers-briggs tests in general are only about 60% accurate. Which is probably one reason it gives you alternative types to consider. In the end, you just have to know thyself and decide which type you truly are. :)

All the MBTI folks in labcoats emphasise that the order of functions isn't related to how good you are at using them, just how you use them. So I guess it's ordering by development and trying to guess what you would have been using as your dominant function to end up developing those particular functions, etc.

This test usually gives me: Ni ~ Ne > Ti ~ Fe > Te ~ Fi > Se ~ Si.
Not a very good means of Typing. It's basically just a way of measuring your self image in regards to the factors defined by the test, whether that relates at all to type or not.
It mainly seems to be very poor in regards to the i vs e distinction of functions (which is the main aspect this includes which the others don't, making it just a 'one at a time' test for N/F/T/S. And of course, Fi is very poorly done here since it defines itself against what the person taking the test feels is important (making it a general development dichotomy, rather than testing for F).
I guess my results aren't too bad. It suggests N dominant with Fe/Ti, though doesn't clearly identify whether that should be the introverted or extraverted option for those criteria.

I agree. First time I took it I was a clear INTP with a little strong F side.
This time it was INTP with excellent Si use.
It really asks questions that are on the whim of the day.

For me it was a matter of misinterpretation, not misunderstanding. Using words like "mystical" and such conjures up images of muttering psychics waving their gnarled hands over swirling glass orbs. Some words just cause a reflexive snarl in my brain, and I immediately think "that's not me".
If they'd talked more about intuition and gut-feelings, then I would have answered differently.

Why can't there be a personality type with a dominant Ti and auxilliary Fi? With a tertiary Ne close behind?
Because if I follow the conclusion of I'm an INTP, (and every meyers-briggs test suggests I strongly am) I should never have developed Fi even in the slightest of degrees.
Where is the justification for only 16 types? I don't buy it ;)

It's to do with the role of each function - the roles express the interaction between functions, rather than the strength or weakness of a particular function. For example, Fi on its own is just that - introverted feeling, responding emotionally to things - but with auxiliary Ne it operates towards establishing a framework of ideals and principles that inform action and belief. The features of the type aren't just its functions, but the interplay of its functions.
For example, I have highly developed Ti, but it doesn't play a role in my personality in the way that Fi and Ne do. It's used as a tool. Often, Ti is steering the ship, but Fi sets the course and grabs the tiller in a storm. I only really object to people being irrational when I think it's leading them astray; if they appear to be continuing merrily along the right path without need of logic, I'm content to leave them to it.
Myers and Briggs were themselves an INFP and an INFJ; nonetheless they employed various functions - Ti for example - that don't feature in their functional order to create the type system. It's possible to be very good at using these functions, e.g. just because you've had to use them, without actually having a preference for them and without them playing a defining role in your personality.
Most tests measure the clarity of a preference, rather than its strength, and say nothing of the skill with which the preferred functions are used. This test is attempting to measure strength of preference and degree of use and decide a type based on that. So what you having a high score for Fi but being an INTP means is that you're good at using Fi, but Fi doesn't define you; much as I'm good at using Ti, but I'm not 'a Rational'.
Incidentally, there is some room in Jung's original theory for opposite functions to merge into a transcendent function in order to overcome a life-stopping tension of two equally strong opposite functions in contention with one another, and he says that the transcendent function can remain after the tension is resolved (it sounds like he's talking about recovery from madness) to form the basis of a new understanding.

Interesting, last time I took this (recently, too) I got INTP as my type and ENTP as a suggestion. I'm definitely more introverted than extraverted, though, so...
Also, ENFJ is highly unlikely - my sister's an ENFJ, and my personality is nothing like hers. She's a fairly bossy, passionate, people-loving social worker, and I'm, well, not.
Also, it's kind of fascinating how many INTPs have more developed Fi than Fe, even though Fe is supposed to be their/our inferior function, and Fi merely a shadow function. I've read through the results of INFPs taking the same test and their inferior function, Te, was on average more developed than their shadow, Ti (and those that did have high Ti tended to have "excellent use," and weren't entirely certain about their type).
My Si/Se are even lower than they were previously, of which I should probably be ashamed.

Love the 4 temperaments, this fittted pretty easily: Corresponding best-fit temperaments based on your profile: Theorist; secondly Catalyst; then Improviser; and lastly, Stabilizer.
I have for a while considered myself INxP. My Ti and Fi are only .1 difference here. I see myself in both descriptions for INTP and INFP, although I have no particular interest in kittens etc. Any thoughts on this?
EDIT: it seems to me that I use Ti as my judgement, the way that I think through problems, create frameworks etc, this I do definately Ti (according to this thread http://www.intpforum.com/showthread.php?t=6582). But I do it for the purposes of Fi - that is, to discover what is worth standing up for, what is my moral compass, etc, once I have come to a decision, I filter through Fi.
Do you think therefore given the above explanation, that I am INTP or INFP?
Also, both these, my 2 largest, (Ti and Fi) come under the 'judging' rather than 'percieving'... yet it puts me as a P... I don't really understand that either.

This is a really difficult test for me... I am being serious. I am not entirely sure how to answer some of these, mostly because I am analyzing the occurrence of each thing to see if it becomes valid enough to give any notice.
It seems to be taking too long to answer any of these questions. I am sure the average time to answer 48 questions is way below 5 minutes, where for myself it can be 2-5 minutes per question haha, maybe I am just too tired to think correctly.

If these results are different from what you know of yourself, you might consider why your developmental pattern does not align with your expectation. You might also consider exploring this result as a possible better fit.

INTP type Theorist temperament.
ENTP secondary, ISTP third. (Happy about the ENTP cuz i felt like I was becoming more extroverted.

@Dark it's not just you it took me an hour and a half to finish it, mostly because my mind was running wild with scenarios after reading each question.

Also, it's kind of fascinating how many INTPs have more developed Fi than Fe, even though Fe is supposed to be their/our inferior function, and Fi merely a shadow function.
I was surprised at that too. My own results seem to correlate:
extraverted Sensing (Se) 20.4 limited use
introverted Sensing (Si) 30.2 good use
extraverted Intuiting (Ne) 45.5 excellent use
introverted Intuiting (Ni) 27 average use
extraverted Thinking (Te) 29.4 average use
introverted Thinking (Ti) 52.7 excellent use
extraverted Feeling (Fe) 2.8 unused
introverted Feeling (Fi) 32.2 good use
Were those questions referencing mystical experience and such really about "intuition"? I don't think of it that way at all...
The Fe report as "unused" is vaguely amusing.

Summary Analysis of Profile
By focusing on the strongest configuration of cognitive processes, your pattern of responses most closely matches individuals of this type: INTP (http://www.bestfittype.com/intp.html)Lead (Dominant) Process
Introverted Thinking (Ti): Gaining leverage (influence) using a framework. Detaching to study a situation from different angles and fit it to a theory, framework or principle. Checking for accuracy. Using leverage to solve the problem.
Support (Auxilliary) Process
Extraverted Intuiting (Ne): Exploring the emerging patterns. Wondering about patterns of interaction across various situations. Checking what hypotheses and meanings fit best. Trusting what emerges as you shift a situation’s dynamics.
If these cognitive processes don't fit well then consider these types: ENTP (http://www.bestfittype.com/entp.html), or INFP (http://www.bestfittype.com/infp.html)

I'm kind of surprised at how high my Fi is...
Well, looking back at some of the other posts, it seems the test itself is overpresenting Fi, even though I think mine is probably higher than average. Idk. Could also be because we're falling into the trap of hitting 5 for "yes" and 1 for "no."

Gosh, I always test as ENTP on this particular test.
However, I am most certainly an introvert.

In decreasing order of %:
Ti = 46.3
Ne = 39
Si = 37.3
Fi = 35.8
Te = 34.3
Se = 19.1
Ni = 15.6
Fe = 12.6
So basically: Ti, Ne, Si, Fi... I think I get my own personality type.

I concede.
I'm just going to go ahead and decide to try INTP on for size. No doubting for a while, just go with it as though it is true and see how that works until some other evidence arrives without me searching for it that challenges it at some point.

It's funny how much one can be affected by being forced into circumstances beyond one's control, and then managing to survive in that environment. I've read that INTPs are great at adaptation, which probably explains why, by this assessment, I've tested as an ESTJ.
